BOX SCORE
Staten Island, NY – Sophomore guard
Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/Apex Academies) hit a runner in the lane with six seconds to go lifting Wagner to a pulsating 74-73 win over Sacred Heart in front of a loud and raucous crowd of 2,035 on Alumni Day at the Spiro Center, many of whom stormed the court in jubilation following the final buzzer.
This contest was the NEC Game of the Week and was seen live on MSG-TV.
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 4-19 on the season, 2-8 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while Sacred Heart falls to 12-9, 5-5 in the NEC.
The game was an offensive affair played at a frenetic pace throughout as the teams combined to hit 26 three-point jumpers. There were 11 ties and nine lead changes as the momentum swung back and forth the entire game.
At intermission, the game was tied at 39-39 as Sacred Heart's Corey Hassan scored 25 of his game-high 36 points in the opening half on 7-of-8 shooting from three-point range. He came into the game leading the NEC in scoring at a 20.7 ppg. clip and in three-pointers made with 68.
Hassan's effort was just two points shy of the Spiro Center single-game scoring record held by Darshan Luckey of Saint Francis (PA) who scored 38 points vs. Wagner on February 3, 2003.
Martin scored 14 of his team-high 28 points in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
The second half was close and intense as the biggest lead enjoyed by either team was just six points. The Seahawks took their first lead of the second half on a jumper by freshman center
Ryan Schrotenboer (Fort Myers, FL/Bishop Verot) with 10:06 to play. The Pioneers answered with a three-pointer by Jerrell Thompson that put Sacred Heart back on top 61-59 at the 9:15 mark.
Sacred Heart took its biggest lead of the game of six on a Hassan three-pointer to make it a 67-61 game with 6:43 left. Wagner then went on a 6-0 burst to retake the lead at 68-67 on a three-pointer by freshman guard
Danny Mundweiler (Overland Park, KS/Olathe East). Ryan Litke came right back with a three-pointer of his own with 4:21 to go to put Sacred Heart back in the lead at 70-68.
Martin knotted the game at 70-70 with a jumper at the 2:52 juncture but Thompson put the Pioneers out in front 73-70 with a three-pointer with 1:34 to go. Wagner countered with a tip-in by senior center
Michael Orock (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) to draw the Seahawks within 73-72 with 55 seconds left.
An illegal screen called on Sacred Heart's Mehmet Sahan with 32 seconds to play allowed Wagner to have the final possession of the game and Wagner called timeout with 27 seconds left to set up the final play.
The ball was worked around the perimeter and wound up in the hands of Martin who drove straight down the lane and floated it into the basket with six seconds to go. Sacred Heart was unable to get off a desperation shot in time as the exuberant student body stormed the court in celebration.
Mundweiler added 12 points for the Seahawks while Orock had nine points as Wagner shot 52 percent for the game. Junior center Clifton Spiller gave Wagner a spark off the bench with seven points and seven rebounds while sophomore guard
Tyler Murray (Toronto, Ontario/Eastern Commerce) had seven points and eight assists, which tied his career high. Sacred Heart, which shot 54 percent for the game, received 11-point outings from Liam Potter and Ryan Litke.
The Seahawks are next in action on Thursday, Feb. 4 when the Seahawks travel to Mount St. Mary's to meet the Mountaineers in a 7:00 pm tip.
NOTES – Mundweiler is averaging 12 points per game over his last four outings. Hassan finished 10-of-12 from three-point range, leaving him one shy of
Joey Mundweiler's NEC-record 11 three-pointers, which he accomplished at Monmouth on Feb. 28, 2009. Mundweiler, who is Danny's older brother, was in attendance and among the 1,000-point scorers who were honored as part of the Alumni Day festivities.
