BOX SCORE

Brooklyn, NY –
St. Francis (NY) used a late 10-0 run to overtake Wagner 57-54 despite a career-high 17-point performance by freshman guard Danny Mundweiler (Overland Park, KS/Olathe East) and a 12-point, nine-rebound effort from senior forward Doug Elwell (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell).

With the loss, Wagner falls to 3-18 on the season, 1-7 in the NEC while St. Francis (NY) improves to 9-10, 6-2 in conference play.

Trailing 40-31 with 13:40 to play following a three-point jumper by Ricky Cadell, the Seahawks caught fire themselves from beyond the arc, outscoring the Terriers 17-7 over the next 9:41. The Seahawk comeback was fueled by five three-point jumpers, the first by senior forward Doug Elwell (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) with 10:27 left to go and the final three-point splash by sophomore guard Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/Apex Academies) with 3:59 left, which put Wagner on top 48-47 for the first time all game.

Sandwiched between those two three-pointers were treys from Elwell, Martin and Mundweiler along with a layup by junor guard T.J. Czeski (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam).

Martin then hit yet another three-pointer with 2:53 to go to make it 51-47 but Stefan Perunicic answered with a three-point bomb of his own to slice the deficit to 51-50 with 2:31 left which triggered a game-winning 10-0 run by the Terriers. During this decisive rally, which put St. Francis (NY) up by a 57-51 margin, Wagner committed a pair of costly turnovers which aided the St. Francis (NY) cause.

Wagner still had a chance when Elwell drilled another three-pointer with 23 seconds left to make it a 57-54. St. Francis (NY) then missed three straight front ends of one-and-one free throw attempts to give the Seahawks a chance to tie but Martin's potential game-tying three-pointer with two seconds to play bounded off the rim as the Terriers held on.

In addition to his12 points and nine boards, Elwell added four assists and two steals while Martin and Murray had nine points apiece. Statistically, the game was nearly dead even as the Terriers outshot Wagner 44 percent to 42 percent and held a slim 31-29 edge in the rebounding department.

Wagner was 13-of-30 from beyond the arc with Mundweiler and Elwell leading the way by making five and four three-pointers, respectively.

Cadell led the Terriers with 19 points while Akeem Bennett chipped in with 16 points while Justin Newton added seven points and 10 assists.

St. Francis (NY) raced out to a 24-15 first half lead on a three-pointer by Perunicic with 6:43 to play in the half. A pair of Mundweiler three-pointers, the latter with one second left in the half, capped an 11-5 spurt that allowed Wagner to head into intermission trailing by just a 29-26 count.

Mundweiler surpassed his career high in the first half alone, leading the way with 14 points on the strength of 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range. His previous career high was 11 points in the win over Saint Peter's on Dec. 12. Murray had nine points in the opening stanza as he and Mundweiler accounted for 23 of Wagner's 29 first-half points.

Wagner will next be in action on Thursday, Jan. 28 when the Seahawks host Quinnipiac in a 7:00 pm tip-off. On this night, Wagner will retire the number of former Wagner College pitcher and current American League Rookie of the Year Andrew Bailey.
