Lawrenceville, NJ- The Wagner College women's soccer team suffered a hard-fought 2-1 loss at the hands of Rider University. Freshman
Ariane Ackerman (River Edge, NJ/ River Dell) scored the lone goal for the Seahawks, who fall to 1-7 on the season.
The Broncs (4-4-1) got on the board quickly when Lauren Musumeci scored on a crossing pass from twenty yards out in the 5th minute. The Seahawks battled back, managing two scoring opportunities by
Dominique Bonura (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ / Immaculate Heart Academy) and
Alyssa Ahern (Cincinnati, OH / Seton), but both were denied by Rider goalkeeper Jenn Nichols.
Rider's second goal came in the 48th minute off Alison Brody's shot from five yards out.
Ackerman cut the deficit in half in the 62nd minute, scoring her third goal of the season off a header from five yards out. Wagner carried the momentum from the goal through the final minutes of the game holding a 6-4 shot advantage in the second half. However, despite these scoring chances, the Seahawks were unable to find the net again.
The Broncs outshot the Seahawks by a narrow 12-10 margin. Freshman goalie
Jen Emigholz (Staten Island, NY / Moore Catholic) finished with four saves while her counterpart Nichols had three.
Wagner will be back in action this week when they host Long Island University on Friday, September 25 at 4:00 PM.
