Seahawks Split Second Day of MAAC Play

New Rochelle, NY – Wagner College Water Polo stands at 10-9 overall (3-1 MAAC) after splitting two games on Sunday against Conference foes the Iona College Gaels and the Siena College Saints. The Seahawks fell to Iona in the opening game, 12-7, but rallied from behind to beat Siena in game two, 7-6.  Freshman Sara Olguin (Whittier, CA/Sonora) was the hero once again for the Seahawks, claiming two of her game-high three goals in the final period for the win.

GAME ONE: WAGNER vs. IONA
The Seahawks fell behind 3-0 early, but tallied two goals in the second period to make the score 5-2 at the half. In their home pool, the Gaels exploded for four goals in the third period followed by a three-goal four quarter to add to their advantage. A valiant effort the Green & White, who tallied five of their seven goals in the second half, came up short, 12-7.

For the second straight day it was sophomore Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) that led the offensive charge for the women. She totaled five of Wagner's seven scores. Senior Alex Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) and sophomore Lauren vanderBent (Shillington, PA/Mifflin) each registered individual goals as well.

Junior goalie Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Fullerton JC) had eight saves in net.

GAME TWO: WAGNER vs. SIENA
The Seahawks weathered the storm in the first period as the Saints jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. Wagner responded well in the second quarter, outscoring Siena 3-1 to make the score 4-4 at halftime. The teams traded goals in the second half before a late Siena score put the Saints up 6-5 entering the final period. Wagner rallied from there, finding the back of the net twice in the last period for the come from behind win. Freshman Sara Olguin (Whittier, CA/Sonora) was the hero once again for the Seahawks, claiming two of her three goals for the win.

Also scoring for Wagner was freshman Lauren French (Colmar, PA/North Penn), senior Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City), Pyrz, and Tomlinson.

Goalies Rodgers and freshman Lauren Lovallo (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) each registered six saves in net.

The women will travel to Villanova, PA next weekend to take on Villanova University and a return engagement with Marist College. Their first game is scheduled for 10:00 AM.
