HARTWICK BOXSCORE

BROWN BOXSCORE

Poughkeepsie, NY –
Wagner College Water Polo split Sunday's doubleheader with a 16-6 loss to No. 15 Hartwick College Hawks followed by an 8-6 win over the Brown University Bears. The win avenged a defeat suffered one week ago at the ECAC Championship, where the Bears dealt the Seahawks a 9-6 loss in the tournament's semifinal round. Brown went on the win the ECAC Championship from there.

Despite a hard fought first half, the Seahawks fell to Hartwick College, 16-6. Wagner held the fifteenth ranked Hawks' potent offense in check, allowing for a 7-3 score at halftime. A second half surge, however, outscored the Seahawks 8-3 in the final two periods.

Six different Seahawks found the back of the net including Carina Giles (Mohton, PA/Mifflin), Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City), Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area), Rebecca Hannings (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), and Alex Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton).

In their second contest, the women came from behind to defeat Brown University, 8-6. The Seahawks rallied for four unanswered goals in the final minutes of the third period as the Green & White erased a 5-2 deficit to take the lead, 6-5. Freshman Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson) was the catalyst – accounting for two goals on Wagner's 4-0 streak. Lauren French (Colmar, PA/North Penn) and Maichrowicz also aided in Wagner's improbable run.

Also tallying scores for the women was freshman Sara Olguin (Whittier, CA/Sonora), who accounted for two markers. Tawny Murphy (Keller, TX/Jenks) added one score, while Tomlinson added her second marker of the day on a penalty shot.

Goalie Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Fullertown) finished with nine saves in net. Her clutch save on a last-minute penalty shot sunk the Bears.

A bright spot was Wagner's much-improved defense, which held Hartwick's offense below their 18.5 goals-per game average for the weekend. The Seahawks also kept Brown's scorers in check – they finished three goals below their 9.0 goals per game average.

This weekend's action puts the womens' overall record at 5-6 overall. The Green & White are scheduled to compete in seven games during their March 17th – 21st spring break.
