Loretto, PA – Devin Sweetney scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Saint Francis (PA) to a 69-42 victory over Wagner in the NEC opener for both teams.
With the win, the Red Flash improve to 2-5 on the season while the Seahawks fall to 0-5.
Sophomore guard
Chris Martin (Sicklervillle, Nj/Apex Academies) scored all 17 of his points during an early stretch that saw Wagner grab a 25-20 lead. But Saint Francis ended the half with a 14-1 run over the final four minutes of the half to take a 34-26 halftime lead.
Saint Francis (PA) then opened the second half with a 17-4 run to widen the gap to 50-31 and never looked back.
Anthony Ervin added 16 points and five rebounds for the Red Flash.
Martin was the only Seahawk player in double figures. Senior center
Michael Orock (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) had six points and seven rebounds while junior guard
T.J. Czeski (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) finished with six points and three assists.
Once again, Wagner was undone by cold shooting from the perimeter as the Seahawks hit just 4-of-23 shots from three-point range. For the game, the Red Flash out-shot Wagner 44%-29%.
Wagner completes its Western Pennsylvania swing on Saturday at Robert Morris in a 7:00 pm tip.
