Las Vegas, NV – Chicago St. ran out to a 38-22 halftime lead and never looked back en route to a 78-63 victory over Wagner in the fourth and final round of the HoopTV Las Vegas Classic.
With the loss, Wagner fell to 2-10 on the season while the Cougars improve to 5-7. Wagner out-scored the Cougars 41-40 in the second half but in the end the huge first-half deficit proved too difficult to overcome.
The Cougars' biggest lead of the game was 19 on two occasions in the first half. The Seahawks clamped a full-court press on in the second half, opening with a 15-6 run to draw to within seven points but this was as close as the Seahawks would get the rest of the way.
Senior center
Michael Orock (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) had 10 points and four rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament team. Sophomore guard
Tyler Murray (Toronto, CA/Eastern Commerce) shared team-high scoring honors with 10 points to go with six rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard Jason Thompson (Richland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) and senior forward
Doug Elwell (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) added nine points apiece.
Chicago St. out-shot the Seahawks 54 percent to 40 percent and won the battle of the boards, 38-24.
Carl Montgomery paced the Cougars with 23 points while Christian Wall added 17 points.
Wagner is next in action on Monday, Dec. 28 when the Seahawks play host to NJIT in a 7:00 pm tip-off at the Spiro Sports Center.
