The Wagner College men's basketball team (0-7) will look to break into the win column at Saint Peter's in a Saturday afternoon matinee vs. the Peacocks of Saint Peter's College. The Seahawks are coming off a 102-91 home loss to Columbia, a game that featured a career-high 34-point outing from sophomore guard
Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/ Apex Academies). Saint Peter's is coming off a 65-54 win over NJIT, which evened its season record at 4-4. Martin leads the Seahawks in scoring at 16.7 ppg. while the Peacocks are paced by guard Wesley Jenkins who checks in at 15.6 ppg.
THE SERIES
The Wagner College Seahawks and the Saint Peter's College Peacocks meet for the 49th time with the Peacocks leading the series 33-15. The teams first met during the 1924-25 season, a 51-26 Wagner win, and the most recent meeting was last season, 59-44 Seahawk win in Staten Island on Nov. 19, 2008.
THE COACHES
Wagner head coach Mike Deane enters his 26th season as a head coach and his seventh as the head man of the Seahawks. He holds an overall coaching mark of 432-316. His 432 wins entering the season rank 24th among all active coaches. In his seventh season at Wagner, Deane is 90-94. Over the previous two seasons, Wagner's 39 wins are the second-most in the NEC behind only Robert Morris. John Dunne enters his fourth season at the helm of the Peacocks. The Peacocks were 11-19 last season and 8-10 in the MAAC. Dunne and his staff came to Saint Peter's after serving as an assistant coach for Louis Orr at Seton Hall for five seasons.
Up Next...Wagner will compete in the HoopTV Las Vegas Classic. The eight-team field begins play on campus sites and consists of Wagner, BYU, Nevada, Chicago St., Eastern Washington, Jackson St., Nebraska and Tulsa. Wagner opens the tournament at BYU on Dec. 17 amd will play at Nevada on Dec. 19. All eight teams then convene in Las Vegas for games on Dec. 22 and Dec. 23. Wagner's opponent in these two games will be determined by the results of the first two games.
