Hamilton, NY – Wagner fell 72-59 to Colgate in non-conference women's basketball action at Cottrell Court. With the win, the Red Raiders improve to 4-0 while the Seahawks are now 0-3.
Junior Sha'Ron Harrison (Paterson, NJ / John F. Kennedy) matched her career-high with 14 points, on 6-11 shooting, while pulling down eight rebounds over 32 minutes of action to lead the Green & White. Senior
Andrea Reed (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) also notched 14 points, on 6-10 shooting, while grabbing five caroms.
Wagner was once again plagued by turnovers, committing 19 miscues that led to a 24-16 Colgate advantage in points off turnovers. Both teams shot at a 43.1 percent-clip, but the Red Raiders were 10-18 (55.6 percent) from long range while the Seahawks were just 3-13 (23.1 percent) from deep.
Down 36-30 at intermission, Reed drilled a triple to start off the second period and freshman
Veronick Fournier (Gatineau, Quebec / Montmorency) followed up a missed shot with a lay-up, bringing the Green & White to within one at 36-35 with 19:06 remaining in the game. However, Colgate would not be denied as Sami Kozlowski drilled two of her game-high 19 points on a jumper, pushing the lead back out to three before Katie Garman knocked down a three pointer, making it a six-point game at 41-35.
Wagner would continue to fight and got to within four at 59-55 with 5:51 to go on an
Ashley Olsen (Jr., Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) jumper. However, the Seahawks would not be able to get any closer as Colgate closed out the game on a 13-4 run, winning going away 72-59.
Also scoring in double-figures for Colgate were Candice Green (14 points), Jhazmine Lynch (12 points) and Kendra Brim (10 points).
Wagner started the game on fire taking an early 7-1 lead on five points from freshman
Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec / Montmorency) and a jumper from Reed. Later in the half with the Seahawks up 11-6, the Red Raiders scored nine-straight points to assume a 15-11 lead with 13:18 to go. Wagner immediately answered with five-straight, reclaiming the lead at 16-15. The two teams would continue to battle the rest of the half, before Colgate closed out the half with five-straight points to take a 36-30 lead into halftime.
After opening the year with three-straight games on the road, Wagner hosts Siena in its season-opener on Tuesday, November 24 at 7:00 pm.
