Briana Vassallo (Saddle Brook, NJ / Paramus Catholic) and a tie-breaking goal by freshman
Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) lifted Wagner over Fairleigh Dickinson 3-1 this afternoon at Wagner College Stadium. The Green & White improve to 2-13-2 (1-7-1 NEC) on the season.
Wagner opened up the scoring in the sixth minute when Vassallo cashed in her first goal of the game on a breakaway shot from 20 yards out. This lead held until the 40th minute when FDU's Rashidah Sherman managed to tie up the game off a pass from teammate Francesca Yaccarine.
In the 70th minute of the second half, the Green & White retook the lead for good on Vigliotti's goal from in front of the net. The rookie standout ran down the right side and buried her shot to the opposite side of the netting from 10 yards out to give the Seahawks an insurmountable 2-1 lead.
In the 80th minute, Vassallo deposited the insurance goal on a second breakaway goal from the right side. Vassallo now lead Wagner on the season in goals with four.
This lead would hold through the remanding five minutes of the contest as the Green & White walked away with its second win of the season.
The Knights bested the Seahawks in shots by a narrow 15-10 margin. In goal, sophomore
Jen Emigholz (Staten Island, NY / Moore Catholic) finished the match with seven saves while FDU's Megan MacKellar had three.
Wagner returns to action Friday, October 30th when the Seahawks host NJIT at 3:00 PM. Prior to the game the Green & White will honor seniors
