Big Second Half Leads Robert Morris To 67-45 Win Over Wagner

Robert Morris used a 20-0 run to break open what was a close game on the way to a 67-45 win over Wagner in Northeast Conference (NEC) action at the Sewell Center. The Colonials outscored the Seahawks 40-15 in the second stanza and shot a blistering 72.7 percent (16-22) from the floor, including 70.0 percent (7-10) from three-point land.

With the win, Robert Morris improves to 6-10 and 4-2 in the NEC while Wagner is now 5-11 and 1-5 in the NEC.

In the first half with the Colonials up 12-8, the Green & White ripped off a 12-2 run – including eight straight at one point – to jump out to a 20-15 lead with 7:30 remaining. The Seahawks would extend the lead out to a half-high six at 24-18 on junior John'a Poole's (Middle River, MD / Eastern Tech) fast break lay-up at the 5:47 mark. Robert Morris would briefly regain with a 7-0 spurt only to see sophomore Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) drill two three-pointers to cap a 15-point first half as Wagner went into intermission up 30-27.

During the initial stanza, the Seahawks shot 41.4 percent (12-29), including 80.0 percent (4-5) from beyond the arc. The Seahawk defense also limited Robert Morris to just 37.9 percent shooting (11-29).

The Colonials used a quick 6-2 spurt to wrestle the lead back at 33-32 to begin the second half. Later with the Seahawks trailing 42-38, Poole cut the deficit to 42-40 with 12:06 to go in the game. From that point on it was all Robert Morris as the Colonials used a game-changing 20-0 spurt over the next 5:34 on the way to closing out the game with a 25-5 run. During the pivotal run, Robert Morris hit on all eight shots from the floor.

Olsen led all Seahawks with 15 points and five rebounds while Poole added eight markers. Junior Andrea Reed (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) was held to a season-low two points but still handed out four assists with four rebounds. Sophomore Brittney Thorpe (Newport News, VA / Heritage) matched Olsen with five caroms over 17 minutes of action.

Monet Johnson scored 11 points with a game-high 16 rebounds while Lativia Vails scored 13 of her team-best 15 points in the second half to lead the way for Robert Morris.

The Seahawks shot 35.2 percent (19-54) from the floor, including 45.5 percent from beyond the arc (5-11) but allowed the Colonials to hit on 52.9 percent (27-51) of their attempts, including 45.8 percent (11-24) from three point land.

Wagner concludes its three-game road trip with a 7 pm contest at Saint Francis (PA) on Monday, January 19.

NOTES: The Seahawks' halftime lead was the first over the Colonials since Feb. 1, 2003 and just their fourth of the season … Wagner has now lost eight-straight to Robert Morris since the 2003-2004 campaign but still leads the overall series 29-17 … The Seahawk defense limited reigning NEC Player of the Year Sade Logan, who was averaging 20.8 ppg, to just 10 points, on 3-12 shooting …Both teams combined for just nine free throw attempts with Wagner going 2-5 and Robert Morris 2-4.
