Vassallo’s Two Goals Lead Wagner Over Charleston Southern 4-2

Briana Vassallo
Staten Island, NY – Sophomore Briana Vassallo (Saddle Brook, NJ / Paramus Catholic) scored two goals including the eventual game-winner to lead the Wagner Seahawks to an impressive 4-2 win over Charleston Southern out of the Big South Conference at the Wagner College Stadium. Senior Kendra White (West Kingston, RI / South Kingstown) and sophomore Brooke Keany (Rumson, NJ / Rumson Fair-Haven) each tacked on goals for the Green & White which improved to 2-2-1 while the Buccaneers fall to 3-3-0.

Wagner's four goals are the most scored by the Seahawks since the Green & White hit for 12 in a 12-0 win over Delaware State on Oct. 11, 2004. On the year, Wagner has now scored 10 goals in just five games after only notching 11 last year.

Senior Leslie Reed (Indian Harbour Beach, FL / Satellite) improved to 2-2-1 on the year, making 10 saves between the pipes.

Wagner scored the first goal in the game's seventh minute as Vassallo blasted her first goal from seven yards out off a perfect pass from sophomore Catherine Del Medico (Park Ridge, IL / Maine South). Charleston Southern would rebound as Jen Vroman knocked home a goal from 20 yards out despite being flanked by the Seahawks' defense in the game's 15th minute.

Keany gave the Seahawks a lead they would not relinquish as she scored with an impressive curving blast from 22 yards out from the right side with just 20 seconds remaining in the first half.

Vassallo made it 3-1 just over four minutes into the second half on a bizarre play in which the ball appeared to be bouncing away from the goal before changing directions and finding the back of the net.

Markie Boyce cut the lead to 3-2 with a goal that was assisted by Vroman in the game's 62nd minute.

The Seahawks iced the game in the 68th minute on White's first goal of the year. Freshman Bridget Moriarty's (St. Charles, MO / Francis Howell North) header rocketed off the post right to White, who promptly blasted it in from 10 yards out.

Wagner is at Saint Peter's on Friday, September 19 at 4 pm.
