Staten Island, NY- The Wagner College women's soccer team fell to the Bulldogs of Bryant University this afternoon at Wagner College Stadium. After two nail-biting halves, the Bulldogs managed to squeeze by the Seahawks by a count of 3-2.
The Seahawks were the first to score in the 10th minute of the game when
Dominique Bonura (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/ Immaculate Heart) was credited with a goal off a header that was actually punched in by the Bulldogs' goalie.
Bryant's Danielle Malta knotted the game in the 31st minute when she scored off of a penalty kick, as the first half ended in a 1-1 draw.
Three minutes into the second half, Bryant's Kaitlyn Hinck broke the deadlock with a blast from in front of the net.
Briana Vassallo's (Saddle Brook, NJ/ Paramus Catholic) lightning-fast speed helped lock the game up again in the 71st minute when she faked out the goalkeeper from 30 yards out on a fast break opportunity and buried the shot into the empty net. This was Vassallo's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The Bulldogs then took the lead for good in the 73rd minute when Kaitlyn Hinck deposited the eventual game-winning goal off a centering pass to give Bryant the 3-2 victory.
As for Wagner's goalkeeping,
Sam Schueschner (Brookfield, CT/ Brookfield) went the entire 90 minutes and notched five saves.
Statistically, the teams went shot-for-shot as Bryant (2-7-2) bested Wagner by only two shots (14-12). As for corner kicks, both teams had four.
The Green & White (2-6-3, 0-1-0 NEC) take to the road for their next two games as they face Fairleigh Dickinson University on October, 10 at 3 pm and Sacred Heart University pm October 12 at 2 pm.
