Staten Island, NY- The Wagner College women's soccer team lost a close 1-0 game in double overtime this afternoon to the Monmouth Hawks in a Northeast Conference game at Wagner College Stadium.
The Seahawks' defense was full of energy when they stepped out on to the field to take on the Hawks. Offensively, senior
Briana Vassallo (Saddle Brook, NJ/ Paramus Catholic) led the Seahawk attack with five shots, including two on goal, while
Jessica Balling (Seaford, NY/ MacArthur) took four shots, three of which were on goal.
After holding off the Monmouth offense throughout the game, the Seahawks succumbed to the Hawks with five seconds left in the second overtime when Monmouth's Andrea Lopez scored the game-winning goal from 10 yards out, giving the Hawks the sudden death victory.
For the game, the Hawks bested the Seahawks in the shots category 26-14. The Hawks also led in corner kicks, 4-2.
In goal, sophomore
Samantha Schueschner (Brookfield, CT/ Brookfield) went the entire 109 minutes, recording 11 saves for the Seahawks.
Wagner (3-11-4, 1-6-1 NEC) will conclude the 2008 season on Sunday, November 2 by hosting the Mountaineers of Mount Saint Mary's.
Start time is set for 1:00 pm and fans are urged to be in their seats prior to that time for a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Wagner's five seniors.
