FINAL STATS
Brooklyn, NY- The Wagner College women's soccer team dropped its Northeast Conference (NEC) opener, falling to the host Blackbirds of Long Island University (7-2-1, 1-0-0 NEC) by a 3-0 score. The Seahawks are now 2-5-3, (0-1-0 NEC) on the year.
The Seahawk's couldn't seem to find an answer for the Blackbirds blistering offense as LIU took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Both of LIU's goals came from Kayleigh Morgan, the first goal in the 25th minute, and the second in the 27th minute.
In the 43rd minute of the game, the Seahawk's came close to putting a score on the board with
Danielle Sheehan's (Farmingdale, NY/ Farmingdale) free kick just outside the box. Her shot , however, sailed high as the Seahawks remained scoreless at the close of the first half.
With 30 minutes remaining in the second half, Wagner's
Diane Gantenhammer (South Farmingdale, NY/ Farmingdale) came close to breaking the shutout with a shot off a corner kick that bounced off the far post.
LIU scored once more in the 57th minute when Aly Hanson picked up a loose ball outside the goal and dribbled through traffic en route to LIU's third score. The game ended 3-0 as the Blackbirds picked up their first conference win.
In goal, senior
Leslie Reed (Indian Harbour Beach, FL/ Satellite) commanded the posts once again for the entire 90 minutes, notching five saves in the loss.
For the game, LIU outshot Wagner 14-9. In the corner kicks category, LIU bested Wagner 8-5.
Wagner returns home on Sunday October, 5 to host the Bulldogs of Bryant University. Start time is set for 1 pm.
