Bridgette Mitchell, a former New Jersey High School Player of the Year, McDonald’s High School All-American, ACC All-Academic Team selection at Duke University and European professional player was named assistant women's basketball coach in February, 2013.
“I am thrilled to have Bridgette join our staff here at Wagner,” Cermignano said. “She serves as a true role model for the present and future young women who will earn their degrees here while representing Wagner on the basketball court.
“In Bridgette, our program receives an infusion of energy each day while, at the same time, drawing upon the experiences and knowledge of someone who played the game at the professional level and, before that, at the highest level scholastically and collegiately,” Cermignano added.. “She’s bright, tough and someone who is a true asset to the Wagner community.”
Before embarking on her Duke and eventual professional career, Mitchell starred at the Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ, where she was the Gatorade Player of the Year, a Second-Team USA Today and Parade All-American. She was also selected Trenton Times All-Prep and was the Trentonian’s All-Area Player of the Year and a four-time first team All-State selection.
As a senior, the Trenton, NJ native averaged 19.6 points, 11.6 rebounds and 5.2 steals and finished his career as the second all-time leading scorer in Peddie School history with 1,480 points and the all-time leading rebounder (970). Mitchell was also named to the Star-Ledger All-State volleyball team in 2004.
Following her 2006 graduation from Peddie, Mitchell went on to enjoy success at Duke where she helped the Blue Devils make an NCAA Tournament appearance in each of her four years. For her career, she played in 131 career games, while making 43 starts. As a senior in 2009-10, Mitchell averaged 8.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game and was Duke’s leading rebounder seven times on the season. As a senior, Mitchell was Duke’s top free throw shooter, checking with an 80 percent average.
Following her 2010 graduation from Duke, Mitchell signed a professional basketball contract, first in France with Villaneuve d’Ascq. She then signed a contract with Enegra Torun in Poland for the 2011-12 season where she led her team to a bronze medal and an appearance in the European Championships.
In 2011, Mitchell signed a training camp contract with the WNBA’s Seattle Storm.
