Derek Getchell joined the Wagner Football staff in the spring of 2023 as the Sehawks’ defensive line coach and was elevated to defensive coordinator in 2024 following three years as an assistant football coach at Bentley University and two years as an assistant football coach at Dean College.
Getchell’s duties at Dean included coaching the defensive backs and serving as the special teams coordinator. He led a secondary that intercepted 22 passes in 10 games in 2018 and helped the Bulldogs capture the ECFC championship in 2019.
Before joining the coaching staff at Dean, Getchell spent more than a decade as an assistant football coach at the high school level. He began his career at Franklin High School, his alma mater, from 2007-11, and later coached at Archbishop Williams High School (2013-14), Braintree High School (2015) and Attleboro High School (2016-18).
At Bentley Getchell served as LB,DL, and Special Teams Coordinator. He coached the NE-10 DPOY in back to back seasons. Cole Mccubery LB 2021, Cedric Dashiel Defensive Line 2022. In 2021 the Falcons finished 9-1 in the regular season and made the DII NCAA Tournament.
Getchellreceived his Bachelor of Science degree in both special education and history from Bridgewater State University in 2019.
