Sean Mazzio ('18) begins his third season as a volunteer assistant coach in 2021 as he will assist the coaching staff in all administrative duties along with mentoring the hitters and infielders.
In his first year on the staff, the Seahawks qualified for the Northeast Conference (NEC) postseason for the fifth time in the last six years. Mazzio helped mentor the Seahawk hitters as they knocked a league-best 21 triples, which ranked 19th in the nation.
A four-year infield starter for the Seahawks, Mazzio started in 54 of the Green & White's 56 games in 2018, serving as the team's primary shortstop. Mazzio was one of three Seahawks to finish the season batting .300 or better, concluding the season with a career-best .307 average, which ranked among the top-10 in the Northeast Conference (NEC). In league play, he batted .363 with a .888 OPS, highlighted by a team-best .476 on-base percentage. During NEC play, he produced 37 hits, good for second on the team, and tied among the top-five in the conference.
The West Chester, PA native posted a team-best .412 on-base percentage in 2018, which ranked seventh in the conference, while finishing second on the Seahawk squad with 63 hits, 33 walks, and nine stolen bases. After helping Wagner to a program-best 38-win campaign and 21 victories in league action, Mazzio was one of a program-best six student-athletes to earn All-NEC honors, as he was named to the First Team.
In game one of the May 18 doubleheader against Sacred Heart, Mazzio became the 12th member of the Wagner 200-hit club after finishing the contest going 4-for-5. All-time, he is just one of seven players in program history to play in 200 or more games. A tough, right-handed hitter, Mazzio batted .352 against left-handed pitching and .484 against southpaws in the NEC.
In 2017, Mazzio played in 49 games at shortstop, batting .303 with 56 hits, third-most on the squad, while delivering nine doubles and connecting on five home runs. He stole 11 bases during the year while producing 17 multi-hit games, which tied for the team lead. In his sophomore season, he was the lone Seahawk to play in all 52 games, making 44 starts at third base, five at shortstop and three at second base. In his inaugural season back in 2015, Mazzio appeared in 45 games while making 42 starts at the hot corner. At the plate, he produced his first four-hit game at NEC foe Mount St. Mary's, finishing the game 4-for-6 with two runs scored and four RBIs in the Seahawks win.
Prior to arriving on Grymes Hill, Mazzio attended Salesianum School in Wilmington, DE, where he earned two varsity letters and led the Sallies to a 12-6 record as a senior in 2014 and a 10-8 mark as a junior in 2013. He was named tri-captain his senior year and earned Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) Second Team honors at year's end.
