Progress Towards Degree

In order to be academically eligible to compete at Wagner College, student-athletes need to satisfy the following academic eligibility requirements. These are the basic eligibility rules, but depending on your academic path, there may be exceptions to these rules. Student-athletes are encouraged to meet with their Student-Athlete Academic advisor and to utilize their services as a resource for academic success. Remember, your academic eligibility is your responsibility!

Full-Time Enrollment: must be enrolled in 4 units or more as a regularly admitted undergraduate student (9 credit hours as a graduate student) in a regular academic term. A student-athlete in their final academic semester may be eligible for an exception, provided the student is enrolled in courses necessary to graduate (which must be certified).

2 Unit Rule (all SA's): must pass at least 2 units in the previous term in order to be eligible to participate in the next term.

6 Credit Rule (all SA's): must pass at least 6 units combined during the Fall and Winter semesters of every academic year.

8 unit Rule (SA's entering their second year of full-time enrollment): must pass at least 8 units before the start of the third semester (can include summer courses or other courses accepted by Wagner for credit (AP, IB, etc.)).

Declared Major Rule (SA's entering their third year of enrollment and beyond): must declare a major ("designated program of study") before the start of the fifth semester, and thereafter make progress toward that specific degree.

40/60/80 Rule (SA's entering their third, fourth, or fifth years of full-time enrollment): must meet the following percentage requirements in their designated program of study:
  • Must reach 40% of degree requirements by the start of the 3rd year.
  • Must reach 60% by the start of the 4th year.
  • Must reach 80% by the start of the 5th year
Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) Requirements (all SA's entering their second year of full-time enrollment and beyond): must meet the following minimum cumulative GPA requirements to be eligible for competition:
  • Must obtain a 1.80 GPA by the start of the 2nd year.
  • Must obtain a 1.90 GPA by the start of the 3rd year.
  • Must obtain a 2.00 GPA by the start of the 4th year and beyond.

Employment

It is permissible for student-athletes to earn income through legitimate employment and fee-for-lessons opportunities. However, the NCAA has established a few requirements that ensure employment is consistent with amateurism principles and protect against extra benefits. It is important to understand these rules in order to avoid jeopardizing eligibility. Student-athletes must also complete the appropriate paperwork if their employment status changes.

A student-athlete may receive compensation:
  • Only for work that is actually performed;
  • Only for the number of hours actually worked; and
  • At a rate that is consistent with the going rate for similar employment opportunities in the area.
A student-athlete may not receive:
  • Payment for the value they might bring to the employer because of publicity, reputation, fame, or personal following obtained because of their athletics ability;
  • Transportation to work or other benefits, unless the same benefits are available equally to all employees;
  • Compensation for any endorsement for a commercial entity or product.

Gambling/Sport Wagering

NCAA Bylaw 10.3 mandates that the following individuals shall not knowingly participate in sports wagering activities or provide information to individuals involved with any type of sports wagering activities that involve college, amateur, or professional sports:
  • Wagner Athletics Department Staff;
  • Wagner Student-Athletes.
The individuals above are PROHIBITED from gambling or wagering on any sport in which the NCAA sponsors a championship, in bowl subdivision football, and in emerging sports for women. This means that staff are NOT allowed to participate in any pools or fantasy leagues in which an entry fee is required and there is the opportunity to win a prize or money.

The NCAA definition of "sports wagering" is below:

"Sports wagering includes placing, accepting or soliciting a wager (on a staff member's or student-athlete's own behalf or on the behalf of others) of any type with any individual or organization on any intercollegiate, amateur or professional team or contest. Examples of sports wagering include, but are not limited to, the use of a bookmaker or parlay card; Internet sports wagering; auctions in which bids are placed on teams, individuals or contests; and pools or fantasy leagues in which an entry fee is required and there is an opportunity to win a prize." [NCAA Bylaw 10.02.1]

and a "wager" is defined as:

"any agreement in which an individual or entity agrees to give up an item of value (e.g., cash, shirt, dinner) in exchange for the possibility of gaining another item of value." [NCAA Bylaw 10.02.2]

Please utilize this information and the resources below when considering sports wagering. If you have any additional questions or concerns please contact the Athletics Compliance Office.

Social Media

As a student-athlete at Wagner College, you are a representative of Wagner Athletics and our mission and core values:

Please Keep in mind:
  • There is no such thing as "delete" on the Internet, so please—think before you post.
  • Always remember what may seem funny to you, does not seem funny to your coach/sport administrator or potential employer.
  • You serve as a role model to the rest of the Wagner community. Carry yourself with respect at all times and remember you are representing the athletic department, your team and your family at all times. Remain on your game!

How to be the best:
  • Treat others as you wish to be treated. Practice the Golden Rule at all times.
  • Be yourself. Use social media to brand yourself -- pick four or five words that best describe who you want to be and communicate those effectively each day.
  • Choose your surroundings carefully and remember that when 'friends' post photos of you at a party, even if you are not engaged in drinking, partying, etc., you should untag yourself and keep 'propaganda' off your Facebook and Twitter pages. Don't be guilty by association.
  • You have much more to lose than most college students.
  • Support other programs.
Don't even think about it:
  • Talking about ANY information regarding prospective student-athletes will result in an NCAA violation.
  • Any postings on current student-athletes cannot include confidential information including, but not limited to, medical conditions, disciplinary matters, conduct issues, drug testing results, or academic information.
  • Responding to an offensive or negative post by a fan or friend will get you nowhere. There is no winner in that game.
  • Be mindful of who you accept as a friend. Just because they look good in a picture doesn't mean they have good intentions for your information. If you don't know them, don't friend them.
