BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – The NEC announced on Monday that redshirt freshman quarterback
Benjamin Newman has been named NEC Rookie of the Week following his performance in Wagner's 31-7 victory over Southern Connecticut State on Saturday.
With the selection, Newman becomes the first Wagner quarterback to earn NEC Rookie of the Week honors since Nick Doscher received the award five times during the 2009 season.
Making his first collegiate start, Newman completed 23-of-33 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns. His 267 passing yards are the most by a Wagner quarterback since Jake Cady threw for 290 yards against Saint Francis in 2024.
The Rochester, N.Y., native completed passes to nine different receivers, with seven recording multiple receptions.
Newman becomes the 11th Seahawk to earn NEC Rookie of the Week honors since 2017, tying Wagner with Central Connecticut State for the most recipients during that span. He is also the first Wagner offensive player to receive the award since Jaylen Bonneli earned the honor four times during the 2023 season.
Newman and the Seahawks return to action on Saturday when Wagner travels to Harrisonburg, Va., to face James Madison. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field, with live coverage available on ESPN+.
