VESTAL, N.Y. — Wagner men's tennis finished day 2 of the NEC Individuals on Saturday with big wins from its All-Conference performers. Both the singles and doubles championships in Flight A include two Wagner participants each.

Three Seahawks earned their way to the Flight A singles semifinals during day 1 of the tournament; junior Eddie Schmidt, sophomore Nicola Bottelberghs, and redshirt sophomore Lukas Escher were each playing for two spots in the Flight A singles championship round. 

Schmidt took on Binghamton's Filipe Costa and defeated him in a three-set thriller. The Ludwigsberg native needed a seventh game to overtake Costa in the first set, then the players traded 6-4 set wins as Schmidt earned the 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory. Over in the other semifinal, Escher and Bottelberghs went back and forth with each Seahawk winning a set 7-5, before the reigning NEC Rookie of the Year overtook Bottelberghs in the final set 6-1. 

Wagner is now guaranteed to send a champion to the ITA Masters Championships in Rome, Georgia, as Schmidt and Escher will face off against each other in the Flight A championship tomorrow morning.

Elsewhere in singles, senior Tyler Nguyen dropped his semifinal match in Flight B against FDU's Nate Roberman 2-6, 6-0, 7-10. But Nguyen's day didn't end there, as he still had doubles matches to play with Escher, and they started by winning their quarterfinal match 6-0 against Stonehill's Guillermo Bennaton and Javier Arreaga. In the semifinals, Nguyen and Escher faced Le Moyne's Adrian Daniel and Carlo Zucchini and won 6-1, booking their spot in the championship round.

In the same bracket, Schmidt and Bottelberghs defeated LIU's Victor Sjostrom and Jack Brimm 6-4 in a tough quarterfinal matchup. They faced off against Felipe Costa and Zihe Liao from Chicago State in the semifinals, and handled business with a 6-3 victory.

Along with the singles champion, Wagner is also guaranteed to have a doubles champion reach the ITA Masters. The pairings of Escher/Nguyen and Schmidt/Bottelberghs will face off against each other in the championship round.

Finally, in Flight C, junior Joshua Zhao won his bracket's semifinal match against Chicago State's Cesar Coloma 6-3, 7-6. He will face off against Le Moyne's Luke Hoyland in the championship round. 

The championship rounds of the NEC Individuals will take place tomorrow starting at 9 a.m.
