WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — The Wagner men's tennis team defeated No. 7 Stonehill in the NEC Tennis quarterfinals 4-2, to advance to the semifinal round. This is the second consecutive season that the Seahawks have reached the semifinal round.
Senior Seabastian Dobson and graduate student
Tom Lamers picked up the first win of the day on court 3 of the doubles round (6-4). Stonehill would tie the round at one win apiece, but redshirt freshman
Lukas Escher and sophomore
Eddie Schmidt clinched the doubles point with a gutsy 7-6 win with a 7-4 tiebreaker in the final game.
The Seahawks carried their momentum into the singles round, where senior
Pablo Rodriguez Gonzalez clinched a straight-set win on court 4 (6-1, 7-6 (7-5)), giving his team a 2-1 lead. Escher then won his match on court 2 (6-4, 7-5), following an extra-game win in the second set, which left Schmidt with an opportunity to clinch. After winning a tiebreaker set 7-6 (7-4), Schmidt again had to win a seventh game to win the match.
Stonehill sent the final return shot over the end line, and Wagner clinched their second straight NEC semifinal appearance.
The No. 2 Seahawks will take on No. 6 Le Moyne in the semifinal round of the NEC Championships on Friday, April 17. First serve is set for 12 p.m. at the Mercer County Tennis Complex.
