VILLANOVA, Pa. — The Wagner men's tennis team lost a close road match to Villanova on Saturday, ultimately falling short 4-3 against the Wildcats.
The Seahawks took the early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point, but that doubles point did not come easy. Graduate student
Gabriele Zugarelli and sophomore
Joshua Zhao dropped their set 1-6 on court 2, putting the Seahawks in a hole. But graduate student
Tom Lamers and senior
Sebastian Dobson evened it up with a 6-3 win on court 3. Then, in a tight match that went the distance, sophomore
Eddie Schmidt and redshirt freshman
Lukas Escher won 7-6 on the fifth tiebreaker point, securing the doubles point.
Afterwards, Wagner struggled in the singles round. Only Schmidt and Escher were able to win their singles matches on courts 1 and 2 respectively, while Villlanova won the matches on courts 4 through 6 in straight sets. Once the Wildcats won on court 6, the match was over. Escher's win came too late, and the final team score read 4-3 for the hosts.
