STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner men's tennis team defeated Sacred Heart 4-3 in its season opener on Friday.
The match started well for the Seahawks, as sophomore
Eddie Schmidt and redshirt freshman
Lukas Escher secured the doubles point with a 6-2 win in first doubles.
In the singles round, Escher set the tone with a quick 6-1, 6-3 victory on court 2. Graduate student
Tom Lamers finished second with a 6-4, 6-4 victory on court 3, then Schmidt won a tightly-contested match on court 1, a match that required tiebreakers in the second set. Schmidt would win the tiebreaker 7(4)-6(2), securing Wagner's fourth point, and the victory.

Wagner will return to the courts on Saturday, Feb. 7, when they hit the road to take on Villanova at the Villanova Tennis Complex at 6:15 p.m.
