BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — Sophomore
Eddie Schmidt was named the NEC Co-Player of the Week for his performances against Colgate and Illinois State, the conference announced Thursday. This is Schmidt's first weekly award of his Wagner career, and the program's first Player of the Week win since David Krasner won it in November of 2023. Schmidt spilt the award with Le Moyne's Carlo Zucchini.
Against Colgate on Feb. 20, Schmidt did not complete his doubles match, but he won his singles match in straight sets, including a 7-6 tiebreak win in set two which helped the Seahawks secure the 4-0 team victory.
Despite the 4-3 loss to Illinois State the next day, Schmidt picked up another two individual wins. He joined redshirt freshman
Lukas Escher in winning the doubles match 6-1, then completed his second straight-set (6-4, 6-4) victory in as many days in the singles round.
Escher was also named an NEC Prime Performer this week for his performances. In addition to the doubles match he won with Schmidt, he also won both of his singles matches. He won the clinching match against Colgate in straight sets (6-4, 6-4), then battled back from a 1-0 set deficit against Illinois State to win the match in three sets (4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3).
The Seahawks will return to the courts on Sunday, March 8, where they will play a road match against Monmouth. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
