BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — Redshirt freshman
Lukas Escher has been named the NEC Rookie of the Week for his performances against Sacred Heart and Villanova, the conference announced Thursday.
Against the Pioneers, Escher won both of his matches. He easily won his first doubles match with sophomore
Eddie Schmidt, six games to two, then went on to win his singles match in straight sets (6-1, 6-3).
The next day against the Wildcats, Escher won both of his matches again, finishing the weekend 4-0. Escher paired up with Schmidt again and won a tightly-contested doubles match 7-6 after 5 tiebreaker points. He then went the distance in his singles match, ultimately prevailing two sets to one (5-7, 7(5)-6, 6-3).
Escher's Rookie of the Week nod is the first for a Wagner player this season, and the first since former Seahawk
Damian Janiszewski won three straight last season.
Additionally, Schmidt was named a Prime Performer this weekend. Along with the doubles matches he won with Escher, Schmidt also won his two singles matches. He defeated Sacred Heart's on court 1 in straight sets (6-2, 7(4)-6), then came from behind and defeated Villanova in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-2).
The Seahawks return to the courts on Valentine's day, when they take a trip up to Fordham and take on the Rams at 6 p.m.
