Fencing Concludes Regular Season At The Shark Showdown

Brooklyn, NY Wagner College men's and women's fencing team competed in the Shark Showdown facing off against schools such as NYU, Yeshiva, Hunter, and host LIU.

In the opening round, the Seahawks faced off against NYU. The women fell 18-9, while the men lost 16-11.

For the women's team, senior Katerina Cervenkova led the epee squad with two victories, while junior Sofia Lopez earned two wins and Natalja Stiller added one. The sabre squad lost a close 5-4 match, with freshman Villo Nyiri impressing by winning two of her matches, and junior Fanny Straub and sophomore Morrigan Adams each earning one. The foil squad suffered an 8-1 defeat, with sophomore Renata Ziganova picking up the lone win.


On the men's side, sophomore Daniel Ojeda had a standout performance in epee, securing three victories to lead the squad to a 7-2 win over NYU. Sophomores Ismael Chavez and Jamie Prime each contributed a victory. The foil squad, led by freshman Liam Conroy with one win, fell 8-1 to NYU. In sabre, sophomore Charlie Dolan earned two victories and sophomore Theodore Huston added one, but the team lost 6-3.


In the second round, Wagner squared off against Yeshiva. The women's team cruised to a 20-2 victory, while the men's team won by default due to Yeshiva's men's team absence.

For the women, senior Alex Cole and Ziganova swept their foil competition with perfect 4-0 records. Freshman Maria Lopez won three epee bouts, with Cervenkova contributing two wins and Sofia Lopez earning one.


The third round saw another dominant performance as the Seahawks defeated Hunter College, with the women winning 23-4 and the men 25-2.

The women's epee and sabre squads both posted perfect 9-0 records. For foil, Cole and Ziganova helped secure a 5-4 win, with Ziganova winning all three of her matches and Cole adding two.

On the men's side, the sabre squad swept Hunter 9-0. Both the epee and foil squads recorded 8-1 victories. Freshman Gianni Torres led epee with three wins, while freshmen AJ Sako and sophomore Isaac Oden each contributed multiple victories. For foil, freshmen Emiliano Renteria and sophomore Benjamin Tan went 3-0, while Conroy added two wins.


In round four, Wagner faced Lafayette, with the women winning 16-9 and the men taking a 16-11 victory.

The women's epee squad dominated 7-2, with Sofia Lopez going undefeated at 3-0. Stiller added two wins, and junior Kailey Marino contributed one. The foil squad lost a nail-biting 5-4 match, with Cole and Ziganova each recording two wins. The sabre squad, however, dominated 8-1, with Nyiri and Adams each securing three wins, and Straub adding two.


On the men's side, the sabre squad triumphed 8-1. Vinci and Dolan both went 3-0, with Huston contributing two wins. In foil, the Seahawks secured a close 5-4 victory, with Renteria earning three wins, and Tan and Conroy adding one each. The epee squad struggled, falling 6-3 despite two victories from Chavez and one from Ojeda.


In the final round, Wagner faced host LIU. The women emerged victorious with an 18-9 win, while the men were narrowly defeated 15-12.

For the women, the sabre squad dominated 8-1, the epee squad won 7-2, and the foil squad lost 6-3. Cervenkova led the epee squad with three wins, Nyiri went 3-0 for sabre, and Ziganova won all three of her foil matches.


For the men, the epee squad won 6-3 that was led by Ojeda's three wins. For the foil squad, the Seahawks won a nail bitter in the 5-4. Renteria and Conroy came up big winning their last two matches to submit their win. Lastly, for the sabre squad, although sophomore Noah Beitel earned one victory in the third bout, they couldnt find an answer to keep the pressure on the sharks as the final score was 8-1.


The Seahawks will be heading to the NCAA MidAtlantic/South Regionals on Saturday, March 8.
