Fencing Competes At Penn State Invitational


University Park, PA—Wagner's men's and women's fencing teams concluded the weekend at the Penn State Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The Seahawks faced the top Division I programs, including the host Nittany Lions, as well as Temple, North Carolina, Haverford, and Columbia.

Round 1: Temple 18 - Wagner 9 (W)
The Seahawks started the day with a strong performance by the women's saber squad, defeating Temple 6-3. Junior Fanny Straub, sophomore Morrigan Adams, and freshman Villo Nyiri each secured two wins. In the epee, freshman Maria Lopez claimed a victory, while senior Alex Cole and sophomore Renata Ziganova each earned one win for the foil squad.

Round 2: Penn State 22 - Wagner 5 (M), Penn State 21 - Wagner 6 (W)
Against the Nittany Lions, the men's saber squad had a closely contested match, losing 5-4. Sophomores Charlie Dolan, Noah Beitel, Flavio Vinci, and freshman Broghan Bukowski each contributed one win. In the epee, freshman Daniel Ojeda Buitrago secured one victory.

For the women, Nyiri and Straub each earned a win in the saber squad. Ziganova added one win for the foil squad, while in the epee, Lopez claimed two wins, and junior Kailey Marino added another.

Round 3: North Carolina 20 - Wagner 7 (M), North Carolina 15 - Wagner 12 (W)
Facing the Tar Heels, the men's saber squad saw Vinci achieve two victories. In the foil squad, freshman Emiliano Renteria won two matches, and sophomore Benjamin Tan earned one. For the epee, sophomores Isaac Oden and Ojeda each secured a win.

The women's saber squad excelled, defeating North Carolina 7-2. Straub claimed three wins, while Nyiri and Adams each earned two. In the foil squad, Ziganova won three matches, and Cole added two wins. However, both the foil squad (5-4) and epee squad (8-1) narrowly lost. Sophomore Natalja Stiller earned one victory for the epee squad.

Round 5: Columbia 21 - Wagner 6 (M), Columbia 23 - Wagner 4 (W)
Against Columbia, the men's saber squad fought hard but fell short, 7-2, with Vinci and Dolan each earning a win. The foil squad was swept 9-0, but the epee squad narrowly lost 5-4, with freshman Gianni Torres securing two victories and sophomores Ismael Chavez and Ojeda each winning a match.

On the women's side, the saber squad lost 8-1, with Nyiri capturing the lone victory. The foil squad was swept 9-0 by Columbia. In the epee, Stiller secured two wins, and Lopez added one, but the team fell 6-3.

Round 6: Haverford 10 - Wagner 17 (M), Haverford 6 - Wagner 21 (W)
The Seahawks concluded the day with victories over Haverford. The men's saber squad won 6-3, led by Beitel with three wins, Dolan with two, and Bukowski with one. The foil squad narrowly lost 5-4, with Lara and Tan each winning two matches. The epee squad triumphed 7-2, with Torres and Ojeda claiming two victories each, while Chavez and Oden contributed one win apiece.

For the women, the saber squad swept their matches 9-0, with Adams, Straub, and Nyiri each winning all three bouts. The foil squad edged out a 5-4 victory, with Ziganova winning three matches and Adams adding two wins. In the epee, Lopez and Stiller each won three matches, and Marino contributed one victory to secure a 7-2 win.

Next up, the Seahawks will host the Brian Palestis Memorial Invitational at Spiro Sports Center on Sunday, February 2.
