Staten Island, NY - Behind three first half goals, the Wagner women's soccer team earned its first win of the season in a 3-2 win over NJIT on Thursday night at Hameline Field.
Junior Izzy Gomez, and freshmen Alana Arjona and Anayah Rivera all scored their first career collegiate goals in the win, with all three scoring in the opening half.
Gomez got the scoring started early in the seventh minute. A breakaway from the Highlander defense gave Gomez a clear lane for the opening goal of the match.
In the 26th minute, Gomez racked up an assist on the Arjona goal with a beautifully ricocheted heel kick. Arjona did the rest, with her strike coming well outside the box, helping put the Seahawks ahead by two.
Then, in the 34th minute, Rivera was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick goal for the Newark, NJ, native. It marked the most goals scored in a half for the Green & White since its opening round playoff matchup against FDU last season.
NJIT made it interesting in the second half, rattling off two goals in the period. But the Seahawks held on until the very end to earn their first win in 2024.
Senior Sam Hughes came up big in the second half, securing three of her five saves in the period as she inches towards second all-time in program history in the category.
Graduate student Kayla Barbosa logged 37 minutes in her return to the pitch.Â
The Seahawks have two more non-conference games remaining before kicking off Northeast Conference (NEC) play on September 22. They line up to face Binghamton in Vestal, NY, this Sunday at 1:00 pm.
