Boca Raton, FL – The Wagner College football team forced three turnovers in the first half and cut its deficit to one possession at 17-10 at the midway mark, but it wasn't enough, as FAU pulled away for the 41-10 victory on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Wagner falls to 2-3 on the season, while the Owls improve to 2-3 this year.
After the Owls jumped out to a 17-0 lead, Wagner clawed itself back into the contest midway through the second quarter. A red zone interception by sophomore
Zachary Ricci gave the Seahawks their first turnover of the game.
Later in the quarter, a 43-yard connection between graduate student quarterback
Jake Cady and sophomore
Teree McDonald moved the ball into the red zone. The Seahawks cashed in on a six-yard pass from Cady to graduate student
Chase Stafford to get Wagner on the board.
The Wagner defense forced a punt on the ensuing FAU drive and the offense converted the stop into points, as freshman
Matthew Schwindt's first collegiate field goal from 25 yards out made it 17-10 with 2:07 to play in the first half.
The FAU offense stalled again on the following drive, as junior
Sam Martin forced an Owls fumble to give Wagner the ball back. The Green and White could not capitalize on the opportunity, but ended the half on an interception by redshirt senior
Christian Davis.
FAU scored 10 points in the third quarter and 14 points in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.
Cady finished the day with 112 yards through the air and a touchdown. Defensively, sophomore
Jouvenson Romulus led Wagner with eight tackles, while graduate student
Justin Reilly finished with seven stops.
Wagner will resume Northeast Conference (NEC) play at Stonehill next Saturday, October 5, with kickoff set for 1:00 pm.
