Men’s Tennis Team Suffers Tight Loss in Fall Season Opener

Lawrenceville, NJ - On Sunday, the men's tennis team began their fall season with a road dual match at Rider University.

The Seahawks got off to a hot start in doubles play, winning their first and second matches on the backs of four newcomers; graduate students Carlos Rodriguez Gonzalez and Antoine Nivault secured a 6-4 win in their Wagner debut. Freshman, Leon Schmidt and transfer junior, Pablo Rodriguez Gonzalez also came through with a 6-4 win over Rider in doubles.

Wagner proceeded to drop the final doubles match, along with a fourth doubles match that was played as an exhibition.

In singles play, the Seahawks managed two more wins with big performances out of Antoine Nivault and Pablo Rodriguez Gonzalez, each of whom went undefeated in their Wagner debuts.

Carlos Rodriguez Gonzalez battled illness in his Wagner singles debut as the #1, but still managed to bring the match to three sets.

Despite the doubles point and the singles wins from Nivault and Rodriguez Gonzalez, the men's tennis team narrowly lost their first dual match of the season. They'll be back in action next weekend at the NEC Individual Tournament in Binghamton, NY.
