Track & Field Competes At Metropolitan Championships And Scarlet Knight Open Over Weekend

Staten Island, NY | New York, NY - The Wagner College women's and men's track & field teams took part at the Metropolitan Championships (METS) on Friday, February 2nd at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. The very next day, select athletes participated at the Scarlet Knight Open at The Armory in New York, NY. 

At the METS, the women's team would place thirteenth out of 14 teams, scoring 10.5 total points as a team.

Sophomore Elisa Parazzi led the Seahawks in overall points, tying for third place in the high jump. The Angera, Italy native cleared a mark of 1.55m on her third attempt, after clearing the 1.50m mark on the first attempt earlier in the meet. Parazzi would score 5.5 points in the event.

Junior Lara Jacobs set a new personal best in the 3000m, finishing in 10:39.65. The transfer from St. Francis Brooklyn would place seventh, scoring the Green & White two points.

Sophomore Angelina Olah, sophomore Angela Cavalieri, and sophomore Saranda Capani each tallied one point Wagner. Olah placed eighth in the 1000m run, clocking in a time of 3:03.32. Cavalieri finished eighth in the 5000m run, with a time of 19:35.51. Capani concluded the pole vault in eighth as well, clearing a height of 2.90m on her first attempt.

On the men's side, the Seahawks would conclude the meet in fourth place, out of the 15 competing teams. Overall, Wagner would score a team total of 69 points.

Three-time Northeast Conference (NEC) 'Field Athlete of the Week' senior Ryan Lane took home one of two first place finishes for the Seahawks. The Rochester, NH native scored 10 points in the long jump, finishing with a mark of 7.08m. Lane also placed in the high jump, finishing in sixth place with a height of 1.84m. Lane would score three points in the high jump, and 13 overall throughout the meet.

The sophomore duo of Julio Martinez and Eskil Njerve both placed first, out of eight competitors, in the pole vault. Both Seahawks cleared a height of 4.55m to secure their positions.

Sophomore Arjanvir Singh scored eight points for the Green & White, while qualifying for the IC4A/ECAC meet in the 500m. His first time in the event, Singh placed second out of 21 finishers, with a time of 1:05.44.

Junior Kharlin Watkins scored in two events at the METS, after placing fourth in both the high jump and long jump. Watkins' high jump mark was 1.89m, meanwhile his height in the high jump was 6.66m. The Coram, NY native placed fourth out of 29 jumpers in the long jump, scoring 10 points overall for the Seahawks.

Sophomore Justin Morris completed the 3000m run in a personal-best 8:47.48, granting him third in the event out of 13 finishers, while adding six points to the Seahawks total.

The quartet of Singh, freshman Khalil Wason, freshman Josmy Cerda, and sophomore Dante Rodney placed fifth in the 4x200m relay. The Seahawks crossed the baton over the finish line in 1:32.10, scoring four points for the Green & White. 

Other point scorers for the Seahawks include; freshman Dallas Jones, sophomore Matthew Seta, freshman Khalid Brown, sophomore Christopher Milillo, and junior Adrian Pocesta.

Jones found himself finishing the 60m dash in sixth place, with a final time of 7.08, after posting a 7.07 60m dash in the preliminary round.

Seta ran a personal-best in the 3000m, and finished in 8:58.95 for eighth place out of the 13 runners.

Brown was the only Seahawk to place in the triple jump, as he completed the event with a mark of 12.80m on his third attempt, to place eighth overall.

In the weight throw, Milillo and Pocesta placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Milillo launched the weight 15.55m on his sixth and final attempt, meanwhile Pocesta's fourth throw was his best, as he finished with a distance of 15.41m.

 

At the Scarlet Knight Open, sophomore Laura Trenado and junior Gia Comerford placed 11th and 12th, respectively, in the mile. Trenado's time was 5:01.05, meanwhile Comerford crossed right behind her with a time of 5:01.30. 

Current NEC 'Rookie of the Week' freshman June Fernandez qualified for the IC4A/ECAC meet with a 25.19 200m dash, which was 10th overall out of 102 runners, and third overall for freshman.

Junior Ana Blanco Duran ran a personal-best in the 600m, with a time of 1:37.25. Blanco Duran finished the race in 13th, out of the 32 finishers.

As for the men's team, graduate student Dominic Palermo also ran a personal-best in the mile, finishing in 4:11.28, for second place out of 57 participants in the event. 

Freshman Nigel Boboli competed in the 600m for the first time in his collegiate career. Boboli crossed the finish line in 1:22.15, for a sixth place finish out of the 29 runners.

Sophomore Alex Taddeo placed 13th, out of 80, in the 200m dash, with a time of 22.38. Taddeo ran the fastest time out of any sophomore at the meet, in the 200m dash.

Next up, Wagner will participate in the Fast Track Invite on Friday, February 9 at the Armory in New York, NY.
