This Week In Wagner Athletics; Nine Teams In Action As Fencing Gets Set To Begin Season

Staten Island, NY - Here is a look at the Wagner Athletics events for this week.

 

Bowling

- The Green and White will host their first meet of the season as they will match up with Adelphi and Molloy at Rab's Country Lanes on Sunday, October 27.

- At the Golden Bear Invitational last weekend, juniors Samantha McDermott and Angelia Lubrano each ranked in the top third in the field in average game pinfall.

 

Field Hockey

- After defeating Northeast Conference (NEC) opponents Sacred Heart and Saint Francis U over the week, Wagner will travel to North Andover, MA for a conference contest with the Warriors on Friday, October 25 at noon.

- Two days later, the Green & White will play in a non-conference matchup against Drexel. That game is also set to begin at noon.

- With their victory over the Red Flash, the Seahawks secured a spot in the 2024 NEC Tournament, which is set for Friday, November 8 and Sunday, November 10 on Grymes Hill.

- Most recently, freshman goalkeeper Saar van Dalen was tabbed as the NEC's Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in her first year at Wagner.

 

Football

- Wagner will take on FBS Member UMass on Saturday at 3:30 pm on ESPN+

- Wagner earned a 14-0 victory over Saint Francis U to move to 2-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action on Saturday. 

- The victory marked Wagner's first shutout since the 2016 season-opener against Concordia and first shutout in NEC play since 2012, when Wagner earned a 30-0 victory over Albany.

- Wagner's eight sacks against Saint Francis U on Saturday were the fifth-most by an FCS team in a game this season. Senior Luke Jakubauskas earned NEC Prime Performer honors in the process. 

- Averaging three sacks per game, the Seahawk defense not only leads the NEC, but is also third in the country in sacks per contest while sitting 12th nationally with 7.3 tackles for loss per game.

- With two interceptions against SFU, Wagner climbed to 10th nationally with nine interceptions on the year. 

- Graduate student quarterback Jake Cady also earned NEC Prime Performer honors.

Men's Fencing

- The Seahawks will open the 2024-25 season at the Nikki Franke Classic, hosted by Temple University.

- Most recently, members of the Wagner fencing programs competed at the North American Cup.

- In November, Wagner will compete at the Drew Invitational (11/3), the NYU Meet (11/17) and the NFC Varsity Meet, hosted by Brown (11/23-11/24).

Men's Golf

- Playing in their third match of the season, the men's golf team will travel to Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kenilworth, NJ to take on the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Monday, October 21.

- Last week the Seahawks placed 11th out of 18 teams at the Bucknell Invitational Tournament, led by graduate student Thomas Choi who shot a -3, 67 on day one of the tournament.

 

Men's Tennis

- After participating in the ITA Regional tournament last week, the men's tennis team will travel to North Easton, MA to take on NEC-foe Stonehill in a dual match.

- At the ITA Regional Tournament, graduate student Carlos Rodriguez Gonzalez won his first singles match in three sets before falling to one-seeded Paul Inchauspe of Princeton in the second round in a second set tiebreaker.

 

Women's Fencing

- The Seahawks will open the 2024-25 season at the Nikki Franke Classic, hosted by Temple University.

Women's Soccer

- Wagner will host Le Moyne at Hameline Field on Thursday, October 24 at 7 pm.

- Last week the Green & White held two shutouts in a 0-0 draw against Howard and a 1-0 victory against Saint Francis U.

- Senior goalkeeper Sam Hughes was named NEC Defensive Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks while freshman forward Alana Arjona was named a Prime Performer.

 

Women's Tennis

- After participating in the ITA Regional tournament last week, the women's tennis team will be heading to North Easton, MA for a dual match against conference opponent Stonehill.

- During the Regional Tournament, sophomore Paula Ysabelle UY and freshman Victoria Madail both won their single matches in two sets.
