Three Track & Field Athletes Win Weekly Conference Honors

Bridgewater, NJ - Three members of the Wagner women's and men's track & field teams were nominated for weekly Northeast Conference (NEC) awards for their performances at the John Thomas Terrier Classic, announced by the conference on Tuesday. Additionally, four other Seahawks were named NEC 'Prime Performers'.

For the women's team, freshman June Fernandez earned her third 'Rookie of the Week' award of the indoor season. Last week, Fernandez received her second 'Rookie of the Week' honor, along with her first 'Track Athlete of the Week' award after producing her second school record in the 200m, by running a 25.18.

This past weekend, Fernandez participated at the Terrier Classic as well as the Riverhawk Invitational. At the Terrier Classic, Fernandez placed 24th in the 400m dash, finishing in 57.60, which is the conference's second-best time during this season. At the Riverhawk Classic, Fernandez earned a 21st place finish in the 200m dash, clocking in a time of 25.53.

On the men's side, senior Anthony Bentivegna was named as the NEC's 'Track Athlete of the Week' for the first time this season. Bentivegna had the best placement for the Green & White at the Terrier Classic. 

The Staten Island, NY native finished the 5000m run in a conference-best 14:27.50, earning himself third out of 47 runners. Bentivegna granted himself a spot at the IC4A/ECAC meet, in the 5000m, with his performance.

Fellow senior Ryan Lane was named to his third 'Field Athlete of the Week' honor of this 2023-24 indoor season. Previously, Lane was named as the 'Field Athlete of the Week' for jumping 1.96 in the high jump. This past weekend, the Rochester, NH native earned the honor by placing second in the pole vault, and earned a spot at the IC4A/ECAC meet with a mark of 4.65m. 

For the Seahawks, the women's team has been the recipients of three 'Track Athlete of the Week' honors, and four 'Rookie of the Week' awards during this year's indoor season.

Meanwhile on the men's side, Wagner has won two 'Track Athlete of the Week' awards, four 'Field Athlete of the Week' awards, and five 'Rookie of the Week' honors through the six weeks of the indoor season. 

As for the Green & White's 'Prime Performers', senior Jason Marchese qualified for the IC4A/ECAC meet. Marchese ran a 47.82 400m dash, placing himself in sixth place out of 128 finishers in the event. 

Sophomore Julio Martinez also qualified for the IC4A/ECAC meet, with a second place finish in the pole vault, tying Lane with a height of 4.65m.

Graduate student Dominic Palermo earned a spot at the IC4A/ECAC meet in the 3000m run. Palermo crossed the finish line in 8:16.17, for a 45th place finish out of 192 participants.

Junior Ruth-Ann Chambers obtained 23rd in the 400m dash, finishing in a career-best 57.60.

Next up, the Seahawks will compete at the METS or the Bruce Lehane Invitational from Friday, February 2 to Saturday, February 3. The METS will be held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, meanwhile, the Bruce Lehane Invite will take place in Boston, MA.
