Track & Field Participates At John Thomas Terrier Classic And Riverhawk Invitational

Boston, MA - The Wagner College women's and men's track & field teams traveled to Boston, MA to compete at the John Thomas Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University. 

Select members from the women's team also took part at the Riverhawk Classic on Friday, January 26, at the TRACK at new balance, hosted by UMass Amherst. 

At the Terrier Classic, over one hundred women's and men's teams arrived from all over the country to compete over the weekend.

For the Seahawks, junior Ruth-Ann Chambers and freshman June Fernandez placed 23rd and 24th respectively, out of 112 runners, in the 400m dash. Chambers set a personal best with a time of 57.60, with Fernandez training closely behind with a time of 57.63. 

Freshman Angel Okafor finished the 500m dash in 14th, with a time of 1:19.90. Chambers, Fernandez, Okafor, and freshman Magui Calvo-Jorge combined to run a 3:57.95 4x400m relay, which had 31 teams compete in the event.

Sophomore Laura Trenado ran a personal best in the 3000m run, finishing in 46th with a time of 9:55.83, qualifying her for the IC4A/ECAC tournament in the event.

In the field, sophomore Julia Garcia took part in the long jump, where she finished in 20th. Garcia's best attempt came on her third, and took home a mark of 4.94m.

For the men's team, the best placement came from senior Anthony Bentivegna. The Staten Island, NY native finished the 5000m run in 14:27.50, earning himself third out of 47 runners. Bentivegna granted himself a spot at the IC4A/ECAC meet, in the 5000m, with his performance.

Senior Jason Marchese also qualified for the IC4A/ECAC meet. Marchese ran a 47.82 400m dash, placing himself in sixth place out of 128 finishers in the event. 

The Staten Island, NY native was less than one second away from earning his fourth indoor track & field record for Wagner College. Sophomore Arjanvir Singh joined Marchese in the 400m, finishing in 49.55 for 29th place.

Two weeks removed from his fourth place finish at the Penn Select 10, freshman Dallas Jones produced a tenth place finish in the 60m dash. Jones finished the event in 7.17, ranking third amongst other freshmen. 

Graduate student Dominic Palermo also earned a spot at the IC4A/ECAC meet in the 3000m run. Palermo crossed the finish line in 8:16.17, for a 45th place finish out of 192 participants/

In the field, senior Ryan Lane and sophomore Julio Martinez qualified for the IC4A/ECAC meet in the pole vault, as both Seahawks' cleared a height of 4.65m to place tied-for-second in the event, falling behind by .15m.

In the long jump, freshman Khalid Brown jumped a personal best 6.87m for third in the event. Five-time and current Northeast Conference (NEC) 'Rookie of the Week' Jack Mason placed sixth, out of 28 jumpers, in the event, with a mark of 6.76m. 

Junior Kharlin Watkins earned 10th in the long jump and fourth in the high jump at the Terrier Classic. Watkins came away with a distance of 6.57m in the long jump, and a height of 1.95m in the high jump.

 

At the Riverhawk Invitational, Fernandez placed in 21st in the 200m dash. Fernandez ran the 200m in 25.53, which granted her 24th out of 112 finishers.

Junior Lara Jacobs ran a career best in the 5000m. The transfer from St. Francis Brooklyn placed in 18th, out of 32 participants, clocking in at a time of 18:45.55.

 

Next up, the Green & White will compete at the METS or the Bruce Lehane Invitational from Friday, February 2 to Saturday, February 3. The METS will be held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, meanwhile, the Bruce Lehane Invite will take place in Boston, MA.
