Bridgewater, NJ - Members of the Wagner Seahawks track & field teams, freshman Magui Calvo-Jorge and freshman Jack Mason, were both named as 'Rookie of the Week for their performances of the Penn Select 10, announced by the conference on Tuesday.
For Calvo, this was her second time competing for the Seahawks track & field team. She previously participated at the Seahawk Shootout, where Calvo finished the 600m in 1:38.39.
At the Penn Select 10, Calvo finished the 800m in 2:18.27, finishing in sixth out of 23 finishers, first out of all freshmen. Calvo's time in the 800m is the fourth-best in the conference. This is Calvo's first 'Rookie of the Week' honor of her career.
On the men's side, freshman Jack Mason receives his fourth-consecutive 'Rookie of the Week' award. At the Penn Select 10, Mason finished with distances of 7.11m in the long jump, and 14.17m in the triple jump. Mason would bring home third in the long jump, and second in the triple jump.
The only other Seahawks to win the conference's 'Rookie of the Week' award four-straight times was Erik Hjartnes during the 2005-2006 indoor season.
Along with Magui Calvo-Jorge and Jack Mason; sophomore Laura Trenado, senior Ana Blanco Duran, senior Jason Marchese, sophomore Julio Martinez, and graduate student Dominic Palermo earned the title of Northeast Conference 'Prime Performers' for their showings at the Penn Select 10.
Trenado finished third in the mile with a time of 4:58.83, Blanco Duran placed third in the 800m, with a time of 2:17.29. For the men's team, Marchese finished alone atop 35 finishers in the 200m, clocking in a time of 21.86. Palermo placed fourth in the 3000m, with an IC4A/ECAC qualifying time of 8:17.28. In the field, Julio Martinez cleared a mark of 4.71m on his third attempt in the pole vault, landing in third place.
Next up, the Seahawks will take part in the Gotham Cup/Ramapo Opener at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Friday, January 16.
