Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Northeast Conference (NEC) newcomer Stonehill on Sunday afternoon at the Lower Field. The Seahawks picked up their first conference win of the year in walk-off fashion in game one, beating the Skyhawks 3-2 in eight innings, before erasing a 4-0 deficit in game two en route to a 9-5 victory.
With the win in game one, graduate student
Eve Harvey made history. With her 28
th career victory, Harvey is now tied for fifth on the all-time wins list in program history.
Game 1 Recap: Wagner 3-2 Stonehill
Stonehill scored one run apiece in the first and third inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Wagner answered in the bottom half of the third, as senior
Bianca Worthy's RBI double got the Seahawks on the board, before a sacrifice fly by graduate student
Mackenzie Vogler tied the game at 2-2.
Both teams went back and forth from there, before the Seahawks walked it off in the eighth inning. After Vogler led off the inning with a single, an RBI double by sophomore
Justine Carranza two batters later gave the Seahawks the victory.
Harvey earned the complete game win in the circle, striking out eight batters in the process.
The Seahawks held an 11-5 advantage in hits, as Carranza led the way with three hits in the contest, while Conway and Vogler added two hits apiece.
Game 2 Recap: Wagner 9-5 Stonehill
Similar to game one, the Seahawks fell behind in game two, as the Skyhawks scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take the lead.
The Seahawks fought back, as a two-run single by sophomore
Kate Wolf, an RBI single by Carranza, and an RBI double by senior
Alexa Garcia tied the game at 4-4 in the third inning.
Stonehill re-took the lead with a run in the fourth inning, but Wagner once again had the answer.
In the fifth inning, an RBI double by Garcia tied the game at 5-5, before pinch hitter
Brooke Wood came through with a go-ahead RBI double to give the Seahawks a 6-5 lead.
The Seahawks tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth. Worthy doubled home two runs, before stealing home plate to give Wagner a 9-5 advantage.
