Staten Island, NY - Running backs
Rickey Spruill and
Zachary Palmer-Smith combined for six touchdowns on Saturday afternoon as the Wagner College football team concluded its season with a 48-21 victory over Post.
This marks the most points scored by a Wagner team since 2018, when the Seahawks earned a 52-36 win over Bryant. Wagner's five rushing touchdowns during the game are the most since 2009, when Wagner rushed for five scores in a 49-28 win over Sacred Heart.Â
Spruill finished the day with 113 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns along with a receiving touchdown, while Palmer-Smith ran for two scores on the afternoon. Spruill is the first Wagner running back since Ryan Fulse in 2018 with four total touchdowns in one game.Â
The two running backs piled on four first half touchdowns to help Wagner take a 35-7 lead into the intermission. Junior Guenson Alexis added to the total on the opening drive of the game, with graduate student Steven Krajewski finding Alexis on a crossing route for the score.Â
Palmer-Smith began the running back tandem's scoring barrage with a three-yard run up the middle to put Wagner ahead by two scores. Spruill then joined Palmer-Smith with a goal line run of his own on the next drive. Both scores came off of turnovers by Post.
From then on it was all Spruill, who scored two consecutive touchdowns to close out the half for the Green & White. The first came on a four-yard run up the middle with 9:02 remaining in the second quarter, while the second, a five-yard reception, capped off a two-minute drill to end the half.
The duo then traded scores in the third quarter, with Palmer-Smith ripping off a 28-yard rush up the middle for six points before Spruill's big gain of 43 later in the quarter.
Post rattled off two straight touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but the Seahawks maintained control the entire game, comfortably closing out their season with a win at Hameline Field.
The Seahawks recorded a season–high 239 rushing yards on the day as Palmer-Smith scored twice and Spruill tallied four touchdowns.
Defensively, freshman Jouvenson Romulus recorded an interception on the day along with two tackles.
In his final game of his Seahawk career, graduate student John Gioia led the Seahawks with six totals, including 0.5 sacks.Â
With the victory, the Seahawks finish the season with a 4-7 record.Â
