Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College football team will host Central Connecticut to kick off a three-game homestand on Saturday, with kickoff set for noon at Hameline Field on NECFrontRow.
Bonelli Earns Rookie of the Week Honors
Freshman receiver
Jaylen Bonelli of the Wagner College football team was named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week.
Bonelli earns the award for the second time this season after leading the Seahawks with four receptions for 104 yards in Thursday night's game at Saint Francis U.
Eclipsing the century mark for the first time in his collegiate career, Bonelli became the first Wagner true freshman to go for 100 yards receiving since Joe Kinard in 2004.
Bonelli also earned the award following Wagner's win over Merrimack. On the season, the first-year Seahawk has 15 catches for a team-leading 265 yards and a touchdown.
All Eyes On Conference Play
Saturday's game kicks off a three-game homestand for the Seahawks, who have four conference games remaining. Wagner sits at 2-1 in conference play and 1-0 at home on the year.
Taking Care Of The Ball
Wagner is taking care of the football offensively. The Seahawks are first in the NEC and 20
th in the country with three interceptions on the season. Overall, Wagner is 29
th in the country with seven turnovers.
Staying Disciplined
With 40.67 penalty yards per game, the Seahawks lead the NEC and are 15
th nationally.
Defending The Pass
Wagner allows 183 yards through the air per contest, which is good for 22
nd in the country.
The Series
Saturday's contest will be the 35
th meeting between these longtime rivals, with CCSU leading the series 18-16. CCSU has won the last five matchups against Wagner, including a 37-7 victory at in Connecticut last year. During the last five meetings, the teams have combined for 290 points, highlighted by a 51-45 four-overtime classic on Staten Island in 2017.
Familiar Foe
Saturday's game marks another contest against a familiar foe for head coach
Tom Masella. Apart from helping the Seahawks to a league title in 2012, Masella helped the Blue Devils to NEC Championships in 2004 and 2005. In two seasons at CCSU, Masella compiled a15-6 overall record and 11-3 conference mark, winning two championships in the process.
Scouting The Blue Devils
CCSU enters Saturday's contest with a 2-4 record and 0-2 mark in NEC action. Most recently, the Blue Devils fell 44-20 at Duquesne.
