Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener To Rider, 3-2, On Thursday Evening

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's soccer team fought valiantly in the early stages of the contest, tying the match at 1-1. A quick response by the visiting Rider Broncs, who added a second goal in the opening minutes of the second half proved to be the difference, as the Seahawks dropped its season opener, 3-2, on Thursday evening at Hameline Field.

Wagner came out quickly in the opening minutes, but a thru ball was called offsides as Rider used that to record the game's first goal.

In the fourth minute, Rider's Margret Fridriksson was able to locate Camryn Dees from the right as Dees sent one from the center of the box that got past sophomore keeper, Sam Hughes, as the Broncs went ahead 1-0.

The Green & White rallied back. Junior Kayla Barbosa lined up for a corner kick that was deflected back towards her as the Hackettstown, NJ native was able send a cross that found the head of senior forward Madison Carr, as she was able to beat Ellie Sciancalepore to even the match at 1-1.

For Carr, it marked her tenth career goal as a Seahawk. For the Perryville, MD native, she now sits alone in tenth place on the all-time career goals scored, breaking the tie with Jessica Balling (2007-10), Jaclyn Santariello (2003-04) and Cathy McHugh (1997). Additionally, Carr moves into a tie for tenth on the all-time career points with 20, joining former Seahawks McHugh, Stacey Hughes (1997-00) and Monica Zurich (2009-12).

The Broncs wasted little time in getting the go-ahead score. Leonor Alves set up Fridriksson with a pass as she then sent the shot from the middle of the box towards the bottom right corner of the goal as Rider went ahead, 2-1.

The Green & White had a few chances to draw even, as Claire Janis recorded three shots at the keeper, but was denied by Sciancalepore. Rider increased its lead to 3-1 in the opening moments of the second half. Logan Racine was able to connect on a shot from the right side into the low left corner.

Wagner continued to stage a late comeback, as with 42 seconds remaining in the contest, sophomore Olivia Rubbo was able to convert on tip-in goal that beat the Broncs' netminder, as the Seahawks trailed by one, 3-2.

Rider was able to keep the ball away from the Seahawks to hold on for the one-goal victory. Wagner outshot Rider, 17-12, with ten of those opportunities finding their way on net. Hughes finished with four saves on the evening while her counterpart, Sciancalepore, concluded with eight saves. The Seahawks drew five corner kicks to the Broncs one and both teams only committed three fouls in the match.

Wagner will conclude its two-game homestand on Sunday afternoon as they welcome the Fordham University Rams to Hameline Field for a 1:00 p.m. start.
