Women's Basketball Falls In Northeast Conference (NEC) Semifinals, 62-50, To Defending Champions, Mount St. Mary's

Emmitsburg, MD - The No. 4 seeded Wagner women's basketball team was relentless in mounting a comeback but the defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champions and No. 3 seed Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers closed out the semifinals on a 9-2 run as the Seahawks dropped a 62-50 decision on Thursday evening at Knott Arena. 
 
Wagner (17-12) had two players score in double-figures, led by Zhaneia Thybulle, who tallied a team-high 13 points while dishing out four assists and recording two steals. Alex Cowan also reach double-digits, as she finished with 12 points and five rebounds in 31 minutes of action. 
 
The Mountaineers (15-12), who will now host the NEC Championship game for the second straight year against the No. 7 seed, Bryant University on Sunday, had three players net double-figures, led y Michael Harrison's game-high 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the floor and 3 of 6 from the outside. 
 
Kendall Bresee scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds while Kayla Agentowicz added 10 points on 4 of 8 shooting in her 25 minutes of action. 
 
Inside-The-Boxscore...
  • The Seahawks forced 16 turnovers while scoring 13 points off those Mount mishaps. 
    • Wagner committed 11 turnovers as the Mountaineers netted 12 points off those. 
  • The Mount held a 38-34 edge on the glass but the Seahawks doubled up the Mountaineers, 8-4, on the offensive glass. 
  • The Seahawks didn't allow a second-chance point (7-0). 
  • Wagner's defense stifled the Mountaineers in the third quarter, as the Seahawks held them to just 23.1 percent shooting in the quarter (3 of 13) and 22.2 percent from the outside (2 of 9). 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED…
First Quarter…
  • Thybulle opened the game with a right-wing three-pointer before the Mount answered back on an 8-0 run, that was capped off by a pair of made free throws by Jessica Tomasetti. 
  • Wagner scored four straight points, highlighted by a strong drive to the basket by Drayah Heyward as the Green & White narrowed the gap to one, 8-7. 
  • Harrison scored the Mountaineers' third triple of the contest to push the lead to 11-7 before Katrice Jackson was able to craft an impressive move on her way to the hoop before another Harrison bucket halted the Seahawks' momentum. 
  • Mount closed the quarter scoring eight of the final 12 points in building a 21-13 lead as Agentowicz was able to beat the first-quarter horn with a turnaround jumper. 
  • The defending league champions closed out the quarter scoring eight of the final 12 points in building a 21-13 lead over Wagner as Agentowicz was able to hit the turnaround jumper in the paint as time was expiring. 
 
Second Quarter…
  • The two teams were in a bit of a scoring drought before Bresee was able to hit on a three-pointer at the 8:53 mark of the quarter. 
  • Marisa Sanchez-Henry scored the visitors' first points of the quarter on a turnaround jumper that brought the lead back into single digits on the ensuing Wagner possession. 
  • Mount took control of the contest, thanks to a 12-4 run over the next four minutes that extended the lead to 36-19 as Harrison once again hit from the outside. 
  • Wagner continued to climb back in the contest, scoring six of the final ten points in the quarter, as Thybulle found the shooters' touch from long distance, finishing the half with 13 points on 5 of 11 shooting from the field and 3 of 4 from three. 
 
 Third Quarter…
  • When play resumed for the second half, Wagner came out more aggressive on both sides of the court, as the Seahawks constructed a 10-2 run over a 3:17 span, as Cowan netted eight of the ten points during this stretch will bringing the lead down to seven 42-35. 
  • The Seahawks made it a one-possession contest, 43-40, with 2:15 left to play in the quarter, as Emilija Krista Grava was able to drain a top of the key three-pointer. 
  • The Mount concluded the stanza with back-to-back triples, as the lead increased to nine, 49-40. 
 
Fourth Quarter…
  • Wagner continued to chip away at the Mount lead, thanks to an 8-4 run had the Seahawks to within five, 53-48, with 4:18 left, as Cowan sank two more free-throws. 
  • It would be the closest the Seahawks would get as the Mountaineers put the game away with a 9-2 run in reaching the finals for the second straight season.
