Football Hosts Sacred Heart On Senior Day

WATCH | Live Stats | Game Notes

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College football team will play host to Sacred Heart on Saturday, with kickoff set for noon on NECFrontRow. Saturday's contest marks the final home game of the season for the Seahawks.

Thank You Seniors

Prior to Saturday's contest, Wagner will honor its senior class: Sowande McWhite, Nicolas Olivier, Tre Vallar, Quincy Guy-Barnes, Prince Hall, Tahjir Tate, Cory Joyce, Branden Barnes, Brandon Stapleton, James Eichler, Jordan Francois, Shane Quast, Coby Calvin, Jayvin Little, and Nicholas Cartwright-Atkins.

Simmons Shines Again

Junior Naiem Simmons caught his team-leading fifth touchdown against Stonehill, which also marked the third consecutive game with a touchdown reception.

Simmons is in the top-5 in the NEC in receiving touchdowns, receiving yards, and yards per reception while leading Wagner in each category.

Mazil's First Collegiate Score

Against the Skyhawks, freshman Damien Mazil recorded his first career touchdown. In his first extended action of the season, Mazil threw for 120 yards while rushing for 35 yards on the afternoon.

Leo Continues To Impress

Graduate student Titus Leo continues to lead the Seahawks with nine tackles for loss on the season while also sitting in second in tackles with 50 total stops on the season.

Leo has been the recipient of numerous preseason awards, taking home HERO Sports First Team Preseason All-America, STATS Perform Second Team Preseason All-America, and Preseason All-NEC honors. Leo also earned a spot on the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List, which Stats Perform presents to the national defensive player of the year in college football's Division I subdivision. Most recently, Leo was named to the watch list for the 2023 Reese's Senior Bowl. Leo joins an elite list comprised of the best seniors and graduate students across all of college football.

Following the 2021 season, Leo was named a Stats Perform FCS Third All-American, First Team FCS All-American by HERO Sports, and Third Team All-American by Phil Steele.

After earning his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology in May, Leo has re-enrolled at Wagner, where he is pursuing a Master's Degree in Business Administration.

Leo was also named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. No player has ever won the NEC Defensive Player of the Year award three times.

This marked the fourth straight season a Seahawk has won the highest honor for a defensive player in the NEC, as Leo follows Super Bowl LV Champion and former All-American Cam Gill, who won the award in 2018 and 2019 and was a HERO Sports FCS Second Team All-American in 2019.

Wagner is the first school in NEC history to win four consecutive NEC Defensive Player of the Year awards. Leo, Gill and defensive lineman Bill Sommers, who earned the distinction in 1996, are the only Wagner players to earn NEC Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Staying Disciplined

Wagner is among the top-25 teams in the country in fewest penalty yards per game (20th, 41.11), fewest penalty yards (20th, 370), and fewest penalties (26th, 45).

The Seahawks have had fewer penalty yards in seven of their nine games this season.

Defensive Scores

With three defensive touchdowns on the season, the Seahawks are tied for fourth in the nation and first in the NEC. Only Houston Christian, Morgan State and Southern U have more defensive scores on the season.

In Wagner's season-opener against Fordham, junior Christian Davis returned a fumble for a touchdown. Against LIU, senior Coby Calvin and linebacker Junior Wily returned interceptions for touchdowns to help the Seahawks to their first win of the season.

The Series

Saturday's game will be the 24th all-time meeting between these longtime Northeast Conference (NEC) rivals in what has been a close, competitive series these past two decades. Overall, the Pioneers lead the overall series 12-11. Wagner has won four of the last nine matchups, including a 28-15 win in the 2017 season finale for both teams back on November 18 in Fairfield, CT.

Scouting The Pioneers

Sacred Heart enters Saturday's matchup with a 4-5 record, most recently falling 35-28 to Duquesne in overtime. The Pioneers have a 2-3 mark in NEC play and are 1-4 away from home on the season.
The Schedule

Wagner will conclude the 2022 season at Duquesne on November 19. Kickoff between the Seahawks and Dukes is scheduled for noon.
