Staten Island, NY - The Wagner men's tennis team hosted its first dual match of the season against Rider.
The Seahawks got the ball rolling with a win of the doubles point. The #2 team of Rodrigo Perez and Odeda Arazza cruised to a 6-2 set over Jake Grimes and Dylan Lachmanen. The tandem of Jai Sai Venkatramana and Lucas Darling wrapped up the point with a 6-4 win at #3 over Roger Martinez and Jaime de Jaraiz.
Though the #1 court was abandoned upon clinch, seniors Tejasvi Mehra and Omar Loutfy were a point away from winning their match at 5-4, but Darling and Venkatramana reached the finish line first, putting Wagner up 1-0.
The match continued in the Seahawks favor as Perez notched a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win at #3 singles over Martinez. Though Wagner took leads in 3 of the remaining 5 matches, including first sets for Venkatramana at #4 and Arazza at #2, the Seahawks would not win another match. Arazza could not convert 6 match points in his second set and ultimately fell 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1.
Venkatramana won his first set 7-5 after trailing in the early stages. However, de Jaraiz took the second and third sets for Rider, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Battling illness, Omar Loutfy fought valiantly in a difficult 7-6 (2), 6-0 loss at #5. Dylan Lachmanen sealed the win for Rider with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #6 over Aryan Gupta.
In its next contest, the Seahawks head to Greenburgh, NY on Saturday and Sunday for the Fordham Invitational with LIU and St. Francis Brooklyn.
