Football Travels To FBS Member Temple On Saturday

WATCH | LISTEN | LIVE STATS | Game Notes

Philadelphia, PA - The Wagner College football team will make the trip to Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA to face off with the Temple University Owls on Saturday, September 25, with kickoff set for 12 pm. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+. Wagner fans can also listen to the game for free through an exclusive live broadcast here

Last Time Out

Behind three total touchdowns by quarterback Jaalon Frazier, the Wagner College Football team led 14-6 at the half and 21-19 midway through the third quarter, but it wasn't enough, as the Seahawks fell 39-24 at Saint Francis U last Saturday.

Junior Todd Simmons and freshman Randy Fizer were on the receiving end of Frazier's two touchdown passes, while the quarterback also ran for a score.

Defensively, junior Coby Calvin recorded an interception and junior Gabriel Bryan led the Green and White with 12 tackles
Efficient Offense

Frazier and the Seahawk offense are improving on a weekly basis. The Seahawk offense has increased its point total each week this season and ranks atop the Northeast Conference (NEC) in team passing efficiency (126.54). Individually, Frazier ranks 13th in all of FCS football in yards per completion (13.76) and 17th in the nation in yards per pass attempt (8.25).

Fizer Makes History

Freshman Randy Fizer scored the first touchdown of his collegiate career on Saturday, an 82-yard catch and run from Frazier in the third quarter to give Wagner a 21-13 lead.

Fizer's catch is the longest reception by a Seahawk since 2012, when Nick Doscher hit Anthony Carrington for an 88-yard strike against Albany.

Additionally, the first-year Seahawk's reception is the third-longest in the FCS this season.

Wagner vs the FBS

Saturday's matchup with the Owls marks the second FBS game of the season for the Seahawks, who fell in the season-opener to Buffalo. Wagner is playing two FBS opponents for the fourth time in program history in 2021. In 2015, the Seahawks played at Rice and at BYU while in 2016 the Green & White traveled to UMass and Boston College. In 2019, Wagner faced UConn and Florida Atlantic.

The Seahawks nearly pulled off their first upset of an FBS opponent in the 2019 opener against UConn, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Huskies before falling 24-21. Thanks to an interception return for a touchdown by defensive back Myron Morris and two rushing touchdowns by Dymitri McKenzie, the Seahawks were within striking distance late in the fourth quarter but fell short in the final minutes.

In their first-ever meeting against an 85-scholarship opponent, the 2012 Seahawks dropped a hard-fought 7-3 contest at FAU in Boca Raton. That 2012 Wagner team opened the season 0-3, before reeling off nine straight wins en route to the program's first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) championship and an ensuing NCAA FCS first-round playoff win over Colgate.

Saturday's game also marks the first-ever meeting between Wagner and Temple.

Applying Pressure

Last Saturday, the Wagner defense combined for four tackles for loss against Saint Francis U. Through three weeks of the season, the Seahawks rank second in the NEC in tackles for loss with 5.7 per game and second in sacks with two per contest.

Young Talent Making An Impact

With players like Fizer or defensive lineman Andre Crawley, head coach Tom Masella is leaning on his young players to make an impact on the team. Overall, the Seahawk depth chart features double-digit starters who are either freshmen or sophomores and are thus getting their first taste of a full college football season this fall.

Scouting The Owls

Temple enters the weekend with a 1-2 overall record after losses to Rutgers and Boston College and a 45-24 victory over Akron in week two. Saturday's contest marks the final non-conference game for the Owls, who finished the 2020 season with a 1-6 conference mark.

The Schedule

On October 2, Wagner is scheduled to host Delaware State for this fall's homecoming game. The final non-conference game of the season will be played on October 9, when the Seahawks travel across New York City to take on Fordham.

Five conference games will round out the 2021 schedule, with home contests against Bryant (October 23), Merrimack (November 6), and Duquesne (November 20), as well as road matchups at LIU (October 30) and Sacred Heart (November 13).
