Staten Island, NY – Madison Carr, the reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week, collected her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the late stages of the contest, but Wagner's comeback attempt fell short as the Seahawks dropped their first match of the year, 2-1, to Manhattan on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.
The Seahawks (2-1-0) recorded a season-high 21 shots with eight going on target, highlighted by Carr's fourth of the season.
Sydney Harwood paced the Jaspers (1-1-0) offense, scoring both goals in the first half.
Wagner seized the early momentum in the contest, as five minutes into the game, senior
Gabby Cipriano sent a cross into the box that junior tri-captain
Annie White was able to head on net but Manhattan's Kim Mains was able to make the stop, keeping the match knotted at 0-0.
The visitors broke the scoreless tie in the 20th minute, as Harwood was able to locate the loose ball and send one past the outstretched reach of Kelly for the game's first score. Wagner tried to answer back quickly as White found space but her shot attempt was denied by Mains.
In the 40th, Manhattan's Corrinne Jackson crossed the ball towards the back post on the left side. Brooke Zimmer was the first Jasper to settle the feed and alertly sent a one-touch pass to Harwood, who beat Kelly to her right, putting the visitors ahead, 2-0.
The Seahawks cut the deficit in half, 2-1, in the later stages of the contest.
Mia Tessier crossed the ball that found the foot of tri-captain
Luisa Barone. The Parsippany, NJ native was surrounded by a couple of Jasper defenders, however, Barone pivoted and moved the ball, spotting Carr on the opposite side as the Perryville, MD native buried the chance.
Wagner had one final chance for the game-tying score after the Jaspers' Ianah Mackey was given a yellow card.
Mia Tessier found room and was able to put a shot on goal, but Mains was able to thwart the chance as Manhattan hung for the victory.
Wagner begins a three-game road trip, starting on Thursday, September 2 as the Seahawks travel to NJIT for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff in Newark, NJ.
