Women's Soccer Falls To NJIT, 1-0, On Thursday Evening

Newark, NJ – The Wagner College women's soccer team and the NJIT Highlanders were pitted in a scoreless draw for the majority of Thursday night's contest until the 77th minute as the Seahawks fell, 1-0, at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

The Green & White (2-2-0) were out-shot by the Highlanders (1-4-0), 19-4, with six of those shots going on target for the home team. Both teams took three corner kicks in the match.

Kelly kept the Highlanders off the board with a pair of saves in the opening half. The first save coming in the 20th minute as Ciara Adams launched a shot that found the arms of the Massapequa, NY native. The junior Seahawk goalkeeper came up big for the visitors in the 32nd as she was tested early by Chamberlain, who sent one that bended towards the upper portion of the net, but Kelly was able to make the two-hand stop.
Wagner's first real chance of the evening came in the 74th minute. Freshman forward Claire Janis was able to spot classmate Emma Roe in the middle of the field, who quickly sent a pass to sophomore Mia Tessier, who was sprinting up the right side.

The Joliette, Quebec native was able to get a step on her defender and fire a quick strike, but her chance was halted by the Highlanders' goalie, Molly Saylor.

Three minutes later, Lauren Chamberlain was able to intercept the ball for the home team and move it down the left side, drawing a corner kick for NJIT. Bailey Chant sent the ball to the far right as Taylor Pape headed the ball past the reach of junior goalkeeper Erin Kelly as the home team struck first..

The Seahawks aggressively tried to get one final attempt, as Kayla Barbosa sprinted to the right corner and booted a left-footed curl that was headed out by a NJIT defender to end the contest.

Wagner will remain on the road for the Labor Day weekend, as the Seahawks head to New Rochelle, NY to tangle with the Iona College Gaels on Sunday, September 5. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Manzella Field.
