Hempstead – NY – The Wagner field hockey team dropped its season opener, 5-1, at Hofstra on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Laura Van Hamburg scored Wagner's lone goal while Erin Franklin made seven saves in goal for the Green & White.
The Seahawks had early chances come from senior Julia Cruces Pastorino but Hofstra's Merlijn van der Vegt was able to keep the visitors off the board.
Hofstra's Lieke Gorsse scored the game's first goal after receiving the pass inside the arc from Tara McNally.
The Pride doubled its lead as Simryn Desai was credited with the goal after redirecting Eline Oldeman's attempt past Franklin.
Van Hamburg's goal helped the visitors cut into the deficit, 2-1, just before the half as
Liselotte Koop sent the corner towards Van Hamburg, who took one dribble and beat van der Vegt.
For Van Hamburg, it marked her second career goal while Koop recorded her first collegiate assist.
Hofstra tacked on three goals in the third to secure the match. Two minutes in, Mercedes Currie scored the first of her two goals on a tip-in from McNally, who notched her second assist of the match.
Lara Borensztein put the home team ahead by three, 4-1, as her goal came off a tipped pass from teammates Djuna Slort and Cami Larsson. Currie added the final tally of the game after leading the charge on a 3-on-0 counterattack.
Pastorino recorded a team-high four shots, two of which found their way on target.
The Seahawks return to action with their home opener against Albany on Friday, September, 3 at 2:00 P.M. at the Wagner College Field Hockey Complex.
