North Andover, MA – The Wagner College women's lacrosse team moved to 4-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play with a 22-11 win over the Merrimack Warriors Saturday at Duane Stadium.
In their first respective action in 25 days, seniors
Madeline Seims and
Stefani Peluso combined for 11 goals and 15 points.
They had plenty of offensive support, as sophomore
Megan Greco added a career-best six goals, one shy of her season total entering the game. Reigning NEC Player of the Week
Erin Kerstetter had a career-best six assists, graduate student
Megan Drum added two goals, and senior
Victoria Tucci added a goal for the Seahawks. Junior
Kasey Dorney had a well-balanced game on both sides of the ball with two goals, an assist, 11 draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Meghan Dzialo led the Warriors with four goals and seven draw controls; Sophie Scearbo and Catherine Mahanna each added two goals.
How it Happened:
Wagner's first six goals came from six different players. Peluso opened the scoring with a goal off a feed from Kerstetter. Tucci and Drum each followed with free-position goals, putting Wagner up 3-0 10 minutes in.
After Merrimack trimmed the deficit to one with back-to-back goals, Seims, also back in action for the first time since the season opener against Villanova, kick-started an offensive explosion that ended with five Seahawks goals in under four minutes, three coming from Greco.
Seims added her second in the closing seconds of the first half to put Wagner up 10-3, then completed her own hat trick in the opening seconds of the second half. After Merrimack pulled back within seven, Seims and Peluso each scored just eight seconds apart, both off feeds from Kerstetter.
Merrimack pulled back within six on two different occasions, at 15-9 and 16-10, but Wagner responded with six of the game's final seven goals, three coming from Seims and two from Greco. With the running clock in effect, Peluso tacked on the game's final score in the final two minutes.
Beyond The Numbers:
- Wagner has still yet to trail in an NEC game this season
- Kerstetter registered her fifth straight game with at least five points, and her 19th straight game with multiple points, dating back to the 2019 season
- Dorney's 11 draw controls surpassed her season total entering the game, and were the most in a game by any Seahawk since Kerstetter had 10 in a win over Quinnipiac last season
Next Up For Wagner:
The Seahawks return to Grymes Hill on Wednesday, March 24 for a 3:00 p.m. showdown with the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, the teams' first match-up since the 2019 NEC Championship Game.
