Women's Basketball Falls To Top-Seed Mount St. Mary's In NEC Championship Game

Emmitsburg, MD – The Wagner women's basketball team fell to the top-seed Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 70-38, in the Northeast Conference (NEC) tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon.

Senior wing Khaleah Edwards had 10 points and four rebounds to lead the Seahawks (13-6; 12-4 NEC), junior Emilija Krista Grava finished with nine points and a team-high five rebounds, and junior Kem Nwabudu chipped in six points. Edwards earned a spot on the league's All-Tournament Team, after averaging 13.0 ppg on 45.0 percent shooting from the field over the two-game postseason.

The Mountaineers had four players score in double-figures, led by Aryna Taylor and Rebecca Lee, who each netted 18 points. The duo combined to shoot 14 of 22 from the floor, with Lee pulling down a game-best 11 rebounds.  Michaela Harrison contributed 15 points, eight coming from the free-throw line while Kendall Bresee, the newly-minted NEC Player and Defensive Player of the Year, finished with 10 points and a game-high eight assists.

Wagner ignited a 12-4 run over a 3:16 span as the Seahawks hit on five of their first seven shots, while the Mountaineers started just 1-for-6 from the floor. Krista Grava and Edwards had five points early and forced three turnovers.

Mount St. Mary's closed out the first quarter with a 10-3 run, cutting the deficit to one, 15-14. The Mountaineers momentum carried into the second quarter, as they opened the period on a 14-2 run, taking a 28-17 lead. Aryna Taylor led the charge with seven points during the near four-minute run, as the home team hit on five of six from the floor

Edwards and LaNiya Miller executed a well-timed, back-door cut as Miller was able to thread the pass that found Edwards, who made the layup, and was fouled, cutting the Mount lead to eight, 28-20.

Over the final three minutes of the quarter, both teams were getting their points from the foul line as Wagner went 4 of 8 down the stretch while the Mountaineers hit at 80.0 percent clip (4 of 5), taking a ten-point lead, 36-26, into the locker room.

When play resumed for the second half, the Seahawks found themselves trailing by just eight at the 7:12 mark, as Edwards reached double-figures by splitting through her defenders on her way to the hoop.

It would be the closest the Seahawks would get in the contest, as the Mountaineers outscored Wagner, 14-2, over the final seven minutes of the period in building a 52-32 advantage.

Mount St. Mary's went on to outscore Wagner, 18-6, in the final quarter as the Mountaineers secured their fourth league title and first since 1995, when they defeated Saint Francis U, 80-61, at Knott Arena. SFU was the No. 2 seed in that contest.
