Women's Basketball Earns Fourth Straight Win; Defeats Manhattan 54-50 On Wednesday

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's basketball team extended their win streak to four straight after defeating the Manhattan College Jaspers, 54-50, on Wednesday evening from the Spiro Sports Center. 
 
The Seahawks had three players score in double-figures, led by Zhaneia Thybulle, who finished with a team-leading 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting from the field. The Elmont, NY native grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while dishing out four assists and swiping two steals in the victory. 
 
Emilija Krista Grava and Lina Loceniece each netted ten points on a combined 8 of 19 from the field, with Loceniece hitting on 2 of 7 from beyond-the-arc. The Latvian duo also combined for nine rebounds in the victory. 
 
Manhattan was paced by Brazil Harvey-Carr, who finished with a game-high 15 points while teammate Dee Dee Davis added 12 points.

WAGNER-MANHATTAN HIGHLIGHTS

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE…
  • Wagner moves to 4-0 on the season when three players score in double-figures.
  • The Seahawks are now 4-0 on the year at home, the first time they have done so since the 2019-20 season. 
  • Wagner converted 21 points off 26 Jaspers turnovers. 
  • Manhattan did out-rebound the Seahawks, 39-31, which included a 19-8 edge on the offensive end. 
  • Wagner's stifling defense held Manhattan at bay in the second quarter, as the visitors managed to convert just 3 of 12 from the field, while the Seahawks hit on 5 of 14 in outscoring Manhattan, 14-6. 
  • For the sixth straight game, Wagner has held its opponents to under 30.0 shooting from three-point range, as Manhattan converted on 18.5 percent from the outside (5 of 27). 

HOW IT HAPPENED…

First Quarter…
  • The two teams traded baskets early in the contest before Manhattan sparked a 12-4 run over a four-minute span that stretched their lead to 14-8, after Bella Nascimento hit on the driving layup. 
  • The Seahawks trailed 16-10 after the first quarter as Harvey-Carr netted home the layup with under a minute left to go. 
 
Second Quarter…
  • Wagner slowly chipped their way back into the game, as they outscored the visitors, 12-6, over the first 7:28 of the quarter, as Thybulle and Loceniece combined to score eight of the 12 points.
  • With 1:49 left before the break, Loceniece was able to put in two in the paint, that tied the score at 22-22. 
  • The Seahawks regained the lead with 63 seconds left as Drayah Heyward hit two big free-throws, giving the home team a 24-22 edge heading into the intermission.

Third Quarter…
  • Wagner opened the third quarter with a 5-1 run that pushed their lead to six, 29-23, as Loceniece drilled home the first three-pointer of the game for the Green & White of Staten Island. 
  • Manhattan fought back over the final four minutes of the quarter, scoring eight of the final 13 points in the frame, but Wagner would enter the final quarter with the one-point lead, 34-33. 
 
Fourth Quarter…
  • Wagner seized the momentum to start the fourth quarter, jumping out on a 7-0 run that saw the Seahawks lead elevate to eight, 41-33, as Alex Cowan hit a deep three-pointer that capped the run by Wagner. 
  • Davis was once again putting the Jaspers' offense on her back, as her layup at the 5:13 mark trimmed the deficit a bit, 41-35, but was answered back by a putback layup by Raven Pitt, forcing Manhattan to call for time. 
  • Following the timeout, a quick 5-0 burst saw the visitors trail by three, 43-40, as Sydney Watkins dialed one up from the corner. 
  • The pace began to quicken as Kem Nwabudu was able to muscle home two from the paint, once again pushing Wagner's lead to five, 45-40. 
  • On Manhattan's ensuing possession, Davis trickled home a three-point that cut the deficit to just two, 45-43. 
  • In the later stages of the contest, Katrice Jackson was able to sink a pair of free-throws that made it 47-43, with 1:21 showing on the game clock. 
  • Wagner essentially put the finishing touches on this game as Thybulle drove the lane and banked home the runner while drawing contact as Wagner extended their advantage to 49-43 with 34 seconds remaining.
  • The Jaspers gave it a final effort, outscoring Wagner 7-4 down the stretch, but the Seahawks held on for their fourth straight victory to remain undefeated at the Spiro Sports Center this season.  

SCHEDULE UPDATE...
  • Wagner's December 4 road contest at Iona College has been postponed due to the Iona College women's basketball team halting team activities following multiple positive COVID-19 results among its Tier I individuals. 
  • Mutually agreed-upon makeup dates between the schools are currently being worked out. 
  • Per Iona's official release, (https://icgaels.com/news/2021/11/27/womens-basketball-iona-wbb-announces-schedule-changes.aspx) "there is no guarantee for a makeup of the contests during the 2021-22 campaign."  

UP NEXT...
  • Wagner will have a couple of days before returning to the Spiro Sports Center to play host to Rider on Tuesday, December 7 for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
